Oregon Farm Bureau officials led by state president Gerald Detering urged a special legislative session to amend the 1957 rural school district law to stop double taxation in joint districts. He cited areas in rural agricultural counties where one rural levy would fund districts, covering multi county unions, while overlapping counties taxed both rural levies.
Rev Wilmer Briggs former pastor of the First Methodist church in Myrtle Point now at Tillamook will conduct a week of evangelistic services at the local Methodist church from Monday October 21 to Friday October 25 starting at 8 PM each evening. Rev Earl B. Horsell, pastor, invites all friends and the general public to attend.

Myrtle Point Chapter of Future Farmers of America elects officers for the year with Glenn Kissell as president and Larry Hermann as vice president. Initiation for Green Hands includes Bruce Miller and others. Members attended Rogue-Umpqua leadership training with adviser Crow and names listed.
Limited memberships remain for the Coquille Valley Community Concert Association. The first concert is Monday October 28 at the Coquille Community Building with The Revelers as the opening act. Memberships cost 6 for adults and 3 for students. admission is by membership card only.
JC's and Lions mobilize in Myrtle Point to raise 90 pints for the Red Cross bloodmobile at Myrtle Crest School this Thursday afternoon. BPW volunteers register donors at the post office and Security Bank, with doctors and nurses collecting from 2 to 6 pm.
U S Rep Charles O Porter and Senator Richard Neuberger urge President Eisenhower to intervene as Oregon faces record unemployment and shrinking payrolls. They cite Bell Telephone demand drops and lumber downturns, asking stopgap funding to avoid deeper forest service cuts and broader fiscal fallout.
Grady Johnson, missing from Myrtle Point since September 16, was found dead by suicide in his cabin near Agness on the Illinois river. Deputy sheriff Ken Dietz and others reported Johnson used a .22 rifle to end his life after a long unsettled disappearance and a trek from Grants Pass to his Agness cabin. The discovery followed a routine search when Dietz and accompanying men heard a thud from the bathroom. The case prompted a wider inquiry into his disappearance and a prior fishing trip rumor. Earl Sydney Corbin died Sept 22 in Redondo Beach California at age 57. He was born Feb 26 1899 in Myrtle Point and leaves two daughters Joann Norwood of Redondo Beach and Ellen Wood of Tacoma and a grandson Earl Corbin Norwood among siblings and relatives. He grew up in Myrtle Point and worked as a millwright in Tacoma before moving to California 14 years ago where he ran a service station until ill health.
Salvation Army volunteers collect and repair old dolls for distribution to families in need at Christmas. Interested people may contact Mrs Neil Metzger at 654 Hermann St Myrtle Point or drop dolls at The Herald office box. The yearly drive has brightened hundreds of children in Coos county.
Mayor Scoop Brodie appointed Councilmen Bud Griffin Ray Harris and Ann Roush to work with the Chamber of Commerce on a proposed free parking lot at city owned property 4th and Maple streets. The council restructured city administration creating a combined recorder treasurer and municipal judge role at 300 dollars monthly with Mrs Gene Parsons named to the post. Ben Nichols remains city administrator since November 1955. Margaret Maybe joins the library board in place of Pearl Mast. Improvement District No 6 assessments approved. City hall hours set 8:30 to 12 and 1 to 5:30 weekdays with Saturday 8:30 to 12.
A coordinated tuberculosis screening will occur in Powers, North Bend, and Myrtle Point high schools following earlier mass X rays. After high rate infection in Coquille area youths, a two-year cycle of skin testing and large X rays is set, with Powers on November 4 and North Bend dates to follow.
Thieves stole the Journal newspaper rack from in front of the Myrtle Point post office early Sunday morning, the third such theft in this location. Police seek leads on the rack’s whereabouts and remind of the new postal regulation affecting outgoing mail after 4:25 p m.
