A reminiscence on the Atlantic City convention notes a shift since World War II with younger veterans driving change. The writer contrasts past rowdy gatherings with a more modern, tempered Legion experience.
Myrtle Point mayor Dr M O Stemmler, father of Harold Stemmler, reportedly bagged a large elk near Sitkum. The prize horns, described as horse-sized, had eleven prongs on one side and nine on the other, with the mayor awaiting a larger pair to be shown.
Senator Wayne Morse invites Oregon small businessmen to speak to the Senate Select Committee on Small Business in Portland on November 14 15 and 16. Senator Edward J Thye of Minnesota will join the hearings which will focus on tax problems and other small business issues including tight money and anti trust.
Local radio hobbyist Bob Weed reports listening to the so called new moon satellite circling 560 miles above Earth. The piece notes the satellite’s reported speed of 18 006 miles per hour and the safety anxieties as it moves over Myrtle Point.
The Herald received a pamphlet from the Cinema Educational Guild accusing Supreme Court Justices led by Earl Warren of treason against the Constitution. It calls for impeachment and cites desegregation as aiding Communist plots, with references to Moscow directives and 1957 congressional records. Continued on Page Two.
Harold K Cherry of the U S Department of Commerce will address the Coos County Chamber of Commerce at noon on Thursday October 24 at the Tioga hotel. He will discuss the 1957 United States Trade Mission to India where he served as Deputy Chief and helped set up the program. The four businessmen and two officials in the mission traveled six weeks to promote international trade and goodwill, visiting 35 countries and nearly 400 cities and meeting over 125,000 foreign businessmen.
Republican leaders announce a two day GOP Women's conference at the Multnomah Hotel in Portland on October 16 and 17. Miss Bertha Adkins will headline a banquet on the 16th to discuss the coming campaign year, followed by social hour. Workshops and a luncheon October 17 feature Mrs. Marjorie Benedict and Mrs. Janet Tourtellotte as speakers. Hotel reservations advised through Mrs. Frederick W. Young in Portland Oregon.
The Myrtle Point Education Association opened its year with a potluck on October 2 led by Albert Skaggs of Research Oregon Education Association. He outlined the field as well as topics like school legislation child welfare and teacher placement with studies from last year on districts and elections turnover and population per district. Attending were school board members and teachers from Gaylord Bridge Broad Bend and McKinley along with Myrtle Point staff.
Robert Detlefsen was elected president of the Coos County Farm Bureau for the coming year at the annual dinner and officer election held at Myrtle Point. The gathering included remarks by Oregon Farm Bureau Federation President Gerald Detering about state membership gains and the upcoming OFBF convention in Eugene.
Lee Valley Community club delegates Mrs Hugh Greer and Mrs Winker Mast pressed Myrtle Point Chamber to back Coos County Court in repairing the badly deteriorated McKinley Lee Valley road. Chamber to arrange meeting with the County Court for action. Also notes parking lot discussion and upcoming Chamber meeting at the high school cafeteria.
Mr and Mrs Wm F Sanders of Salem head of the state forestry radio dept owns a parakeet that has learned to sing Keep Oregon Green. When the Sanders operate their radio set the bird flies over to broadcast the motto to listeners.
The Coos County Chamber of Commerce board of directors will meet Tuesday evening October 15 at 7 30 pm at the Coquille Hotel. Guest Pon Bailey Pacific Northwest District U S Chamber of Commerce will explain the Congressional Action Committee purpose and functions.
Announcement this week states Harold Watzling has leased the Anglers Cafe and Lounge to Mr and Mrs George Slagle who take over as of Tuesday this week Mrs Slagle also owns Le t a s Dress Shop.
In New Zealand deer are designated vermin with about 100 000 shot annually. A bounty of 1.35 dollars per animal is paid to hunters, who are sometimes provided free transport. Officials say drastic measures protect forests watersheds and reforestation efforts.
Meade Alcorn chairman of the National Republican Committee told about 150 Oregon Young Republicans at Coos Bay that Oregon representation in the U S Senate Morse Neuburger are hopelessly bickering and serving no good. He warned the state cannot afford two headline hunters in the Senate and attacked left wing trends while praising Hatfield and the party’s record. Continued on Page Nine.
The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Myrtle Crest School in Myrtle Point on Thursday October 17 from 2 to 6 PM to collect blood. Co chairs Mrs Tom Guerin Jr and Mrs Jack Caughell urge donations to meet an 80 pint quota and support the humanitarian effort.
Committees led by Ken McKay finalize plans for the 7th annual Myrtle Bowl at North Bend Stadium. Oregon State Rooks face Oregon Frosh with a covered stadium and ample parking. Large statewide attendance expected and a full program of festivities is planned.
The Coos County public seems divided over an east west highway plan with factions backing the old Coos Bay Wagon Road route the Coos River route via Melrose and a modern Coos Bay corridor. The State Highway Commission has begun modernization of Highway 42 from Coquille to Myrtle Point and from 99 to Camas Valley urging county unity under the Chamber to finish 42 and then pursue the Wagon Road and new routes.
