A Texas or western ranch narrative recalls a panther encounter with a dog named Scot. The speaker, a youth of sixteen, recalls fencing a creek, discovering the panther on a log, and Scot forcing the cat up a myrtle as the narrator plans a shot for Grandma Grant to witness the live hunt. Winifred Newbury of Broadbent and Ellis Rackleff of Arago, chosen as Coos County outstanding 4-H members, toured Portland with 40 other prize winners. They visited the Pacific International Livestock Exposition and related events, staying at a downtown hotel and attending a 4-H banquet. Newbury, a Myrtle Point High freshman, and Rackleff, Arago High junior, have long 4-H records.
In Bandon Oregon the high school and grades face menial enrollment drop and missing students after a Saturday fire. Teachers work without assured pay while awaiting funds. The district has only $200 from the Junior Red Cross and some donated equipment. a new building is promised but immediate needs persist. The town remains hopeful despite housing shortages and strained finances.
Coos County Dairymen's association will hold a regular meeting at the Coquille courthouse Monday night October 19 at 8 pm. President M M Schmidt says the program includes cooperative marketing discussion by R M Pressey and a report on cooperative dairy manufacture feasibility. A full report on Bangs disease control progress will be presented and a full-time dairy inspector may be appointed.
A community fundraiser titled Benefit A Success concluded with modest attendance and donations. organizers report steady participation from local residents, businesses, and volunteers in Dimaville.
Relatives of Lloyd Jarvis report his condition improving at the Veterans hospital in Roseburg. He endured two recent operations draining his lung and removing rib sections. doctors expect him to recover with no further surgeries needed. His wife and Mrs George McDonald of Remote visited him, plans to stay by his side for several days.
The local VF W post elected new officers at Friday night meetings held at the site hall. Clifford Wilson was chosen commander and Mrs Wilson president of the auxiliary. Auxiliary officers include Mere Nita Wilson president Blanche Felsher second vice president Cora Steele chaplain Edna Bingham conductress Ada Ames junior vice president. Post officers are Clifford Wilson commander Ray Benham senior vice commander Jesse Cotton junior vice commander Scott Greer officer of the day Charles Mack patriotic instructor Treval Johnson quartermaster John Phelps chaplain. Installs planned next month and relief funds from a recent dance given to the Bandon post.
West Coast Telephone announces major reductions in toll and rental charges, projecting annual savings exceeding 90,800 for statewide users. The reform introduces a three minute initial toll period, lowering charges from the prior one minute unit and adjusts extension, headest and wall phone rentals and related service terms.

Henry Gustafson of North Bend will speak at the Townsend club meeting in Coquille at 2 pm next Sunday. A special Townsendites gathering in Coquille last Sunday endorsed candidates for the November election with delegates from nine Coos and Curry county clubs. O T Gant of Coquille was elected chairman. Local attendees included J G Houser N E Bond A I Bander and William Weekly.
Temporary quarters for the Medford Production Credit Association will open at the Coquille Hotel on Monday Oct 19 and stay for 10 days or more to aid farmers and livestock men in Coos and Curry counties. The office will help prepare applications and funds will cover building fences feeds equipment barns and other rehabilitation needs. Applications will be processed promptly and approved checks issued by the Coquille office.
Elder J L Verhei former Portland pastor led services in Bandon and Myrtle Point after visiting Portland elders. Elder Simpson and Mr Insley of the Reorganized LDS church joined, with Verhei conducting Sunday services in Bandon and Myrtle Point before returning to Portland. Simpson stayed for the evening service continuing the afternoon theme.
Delmar Kern forfeited a bail of 10 dollars on a disorderly conduct charge. Fred Holman was fined 5 dollars plus costs for using a void foreign license Saturday. Homer C Rand had no fine but faced 10 dollars in costs for an overloaded trailer Saturday.
At the last city council meeting City Recorder BE A Dodge was directed to advertise bids for roofing or recoating City Hall roof and for 150 feet of fire hose. Mrs Osborne and Mrs Macferrow were recommended for beer retail licenses. John Ansen claimed 878 for bulldozer use during the recent fire.
Miss Jeazsie Palmiter county home demonstration agent holds a second series of meetings on vegetable cookery at multiple venues. Attendees may join sessions at North Bayside Grange hall, Catching Inlet, Fairview Grange hall, Bandon, Arago, and Gaylord Community hall with start times mostly 10:30 am on various October dates.
Sitkum resident Lester Mayse suffered serious burns to his hand and arm after stumbling into a burning root hole while assessing damage from a previous fire at the Albert Christensen home. He has been unable to use the injured limb for two weeks with John Bettencourt of Dora helping him until he returned home Friday evening due to concerns over his Dora dwelling.
A Sunday dawn crash between Bridge Remote left four occupants injured when their automobile rolled over the grade two or three times. Karl Martin suffered deep back and hip cuts and was hospitalized at Mast hospital. Kenneth Marveny had a cut to the head. Mrs C W Brown sustained a cut on the right leg. Rena Payton suffered head and ankle lacerations.
Ward McReynolds and examiners will be at Myrtle Point city hall Thursday from 10 am to 5 pm. Those seeking driving permits or licenses may contact McReynolds during the session.
Henry Breeding was repairing a barn roof at his Dora residence when he slipped and fell onto old lumber, narrowly escaping serious harm and sustaining only slight injuries.
The Women’s Auxiliary of the Diocese of Oregon and three other board members will meet next Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the guild hall. Tea will be served at the close.
Residents in St Renee Valley faced a new fire scare Friday as east winds pushed flames toward Blue or Sandy creek endangering the Lester Mayse and W A Nicka homes. Fog slowed spread and by Monday danger subsided with families evacuating briefly and camps such as Laird Benham Laird moving out then returning home.
