First Bandon Teacher Revered in Local History

Mrs. Rachael Gregg of Oakland spent the winter with her brother FE Hoffman and wife and is noted as the first to teach in Bandon. The initial school at Rosamill, three miles northeast, started with 15 pupils in a area with few residents and limited structures. Mrs. Gregg taught for three years beginning in 1804, riding in by horse and buggy each morning.

Local Fires Again Menace County Firebugs Busy

Fires spread across county this week as humidity drops. The Halls Creek blaze threatened Runsell Hill and Sarah C Barklow homes but with 40 000 volunteers and neighbors brought under control. New blazes reported at Lampa, Garoutte lands, Fred Hobson ranch, Catching Creek and Seven Devis road. CCC and local crews monitor. Firefighting troops swung toward Sandy Creek to tackle a major forest fire.

Myrtle Point FFA Team Excels at Portland Exposition

Myrtle Point High school Future Farmers team, Sam Dement Oliver Shull Charles Hendershott and Vance Freeman, placed 10th in the dairy judging among 64 teams from Idaho Montana California Washington and Oregon. Dement 12th high point in dairy and sixth in Jersey heifers eighth in Guernsey cows. The group earned funds for the trip from the Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce.

E L Decker a former Broadbent resident was badly hurt in an auto accident near Gilroy California. He suffered three broken ribs and other severe injuries while employed by the highway commission and had worked in this area for several years.

The rummage sale sponsored by the Elgin Social Club has been postponed. The club donated all items to refugees of the Bandon fire after the original dates October 9 and 10.

Outstanding Cops 4-H Club Members Win Portland Trip

The Coos County 4-H judges chose Hills Rackleff of Arago and Winifred Newbury of Broadbent as outstanding 4-H club members. They will travel with George Jenkins to Portland for three days during the Pacific International Livestock Exposition, part of a program recognizing personal achievement and leadership across two Oregon counties. Ellis Rackleff, Coquille Poultry 4-H, has earned 20 first prizes, 16 second prizes, and eight thirds at the County Fair, served as club president for two years, and excelled in judging and demonstration work.

Woman's Club Reports Interesting Club Year Start

About 25 women attended the first meeting of the new club year in the city hall. President Mrs T G Sumerlin opened with roll call and reports from department chairmen on public welfare and library work. A report on the Octagon Club and the Homemakers' camp followed, with a suggestion to form a garden club. The meeting closed with the club song Oregon My Oregon and notes on upcoming fall activities.

Ferris McRay of Corvallis spent the weekend with G L Mec Ray. Henry Young of Campbell, Calif., visiting Charles Rackleff. Dr and Mrs E F Lucas of Bandon were guests of Dr and Mrs R H Mast. F L Moon made a Marshfield business trip. Clayton and Danford Mast and June Chandler left for Reno to visit a sister. Mr and Mrs Edgar Rickard and Rosemary dined with E C Barker. The Rackleffs, Mrs Fred Johnson and Henry Young motored to Powers. Mr and Mrs Herbert Snyder planned a Salem trip.
