The Myrtle Point Herald reports a community poll on school building ideas. Voters favor buying land adjacent to the present high school for expansion and some back up alternatives such as expanding Myrtle Crest options, consolidating rural elementary schools, or adding an elementary wing on Myrtle Crest. Final results and trends will be released next week.
Myrtle Point Grange schedules a meeting at the Grange hall Saturday October 15 at 8 pm with Coos County sheriff candidate Al Warthen as guest speaker.
Safeway announces Myrtle Point plant will install dehydration equipment by year end to produce milk concentrate for ice cream needs on the Pacific coast. Cheese production at the plant will be discontinued and staff will shift to the new process. The company says local milk capacity will be expanded and top prices will be paid to dairymen.
Georgia Pacific shut all hunting on its lands in Coos and Curry counties Tuesday and kept the ban through a period of rainfall. Mobley, the logging manager, said the closure was needed after three fires on GP property were blamed on hunters. One fire near Elephant Rock Creek reached about 40 acres. as of early Wednesday morning, rain had not lifted the restriction.
The annual Campfire Girls candy sale begins October 15 and continues into the month. Miss Sayer’s chocolate mint wafers and pecan candies will be sold by 15 girls.

Myrtle Leaf, the Myrtle Point High School newspaper edited by Chuck Humble with Don Wohler as adviser, received a first class rating from the National Scholastic Press Association. Dan Krewson and John Brewer will attend the National Future Farmers of America convention in Kansas City this week.
E. A Jackson of Bridge Port won a $50 gift certificate in September at Henry A Schroeder and Sons furniture store. August winner was Mrs Elsie Vassar of Coos Bay. Erwin Wilberger of Myrtle Point joins the Coos County Economic Development and Coordinating Committee along with Walter Barklow Robert Dillman Adam Donaldson Willis Smith Harry Byrer Geo Stevens William Ruhmann L N Hartley and M R Moffitt. The group met with Tom Current Oregon coordinator of the Economic Development Administration to outline duties and goals. The committee will review county projects for Commerce Department funds to spur permanent industry and job growth in Coos County.
Chester Mullins, owner of Sky Ranch above the city refuse dump site, protested today against dumping on his ranch and urged officials to halt the activity.
No school will be held on Friday October 14 for students in Coos County. Teachers will attend professional meetings as part of a statewide effort to standardize education conference dates. The Coos County Intermediate Education District helped organize workshops for teachers while students stay off campus.
The November 8 general election features a council race with six candidates for three seats. The mayoral contest pits Erwin Wilberger against Bill Winningham, while petitions list Ron Schirmer John Nelson Jim Paullus Bill Downing Kenneth Dietz and Ed Moon for council. Paullus seeks a second term.
Kenneth C Carl of Salem son of Mr and Mrs J D Carl of Arago was chosen president of the Western Association of Dairy Food and Drug Officials for the coming year. He has led the Oregon Department of Agriculture dairy and consumer services division for about 20 years. The Lincoln City convention elected Michael Parke of Wyoming to the executive committee. speakers from industry and government addressed pasteurization, cooperation among agencies, self policing, drug abuse controls, and food safety. Curt Beckham retired as mayoral candidate and councilman. Coquille Valley Elks Golf Dinner set for Oct 15 with trophies to be awarded. The Bobcat Myrtle Point yearbook received a National School Yearbook Association merit certificate for eight straight years of high standards.
Oregon clinics and private physicians now have measles vaccine with 48 000 doses delivered this year and 60 000 allocated for 1966. Vaccine is free on request and aims to protect preschool children not yet in school. a Curry county clinic protected 518 children in one day.
Sharon E. Howe of Myrtle Point was initiated into the Chi Omega sorority at Willamette University. The ceremony marked her joining of the national sorority.
