Coos County residents will see smaller tax bills as final assessments show an 11 percent rise in taxable property countywide driven by timber revaluation and new construction. The average millage rate drops from 916 to 828 mills while several districts report lower budgets and one home fire elsewhere ends in tragedy.
At Myrtle Point a joint meeting of the School Board City Council and Planning Commission weighed two site options for a new high school The highway site near Oregon State Highway 42 and the Coquille River and the hill site on Myrtle Crest were discussed with consultants noting land limits and transmission lines The district plans an eight classroom core for a future high school to move from Spruce Street Public concerns centered on location safety and future development priorities.
Ward Evans died Oct 4 after a long illness in Myrtle Point. Born June 11, 1897 in Dayton Ohio he was 69. A longtime logger and resident of Myrtle Point he leaves wife Florence and daughters Maureen Crose and Pamela Neuhart. Services at Schroeder Bros. Myrtle Point chapel with Rev Wesley Schultz officiating. Burial at Norway Cemetery.
TeleVision Communications Corporation announced filing with the FCC for two microwave channels to bring distant TV signals to Myrtle Point. Officials expect final service in about six months after approval, with additional cable replacement on Cemetery Road now underway as part of a two-year upgrade plan.
The city council authorized a fire drill at a dilapidated Harris Street house and moved to initiate indemnification actions against the former bakery on Spruce Street. The alley vacation was delayed as owners were asked to bond $1500 to cover possible lawsuit costs while Shell seeks a new station fronting Highway 48. The city also purchased a used police car for 1710 from Southwestern Motors, with Lounsbury Ford bidding 1906.
Myrtle Point Herald editor Phyllis Countryman will join The World news staff in Coos Bay on Oct 17, announced by publisher Al Hall. She resigns as Chenaliger secretary after three years and has been a reporter in Hose Bend, Ceese County since 1962.
