Ray mond Ball of Powers found a kerosene can and a sack with knotted cotton twine at an old house between Coquille and Myrtle Point while picking apples. Police recovered the sack later, and Ball and Officer Bert Pearson reported the incident to state police. Firebugs reportedly used a rock wrapped in oil as a wick to start brush fires in the bay area.
The Future Farmers of Myrtle Point placed well in the Coos County Fair with 3rd in Avestock judging. Riverton 2nd, Coos River 2nd, and Bandon 4th among 2000 entries. Myrtle Point exhib its 27 dairy stock, 32 sheep, 10 poultry pens, 2 horses, 2 beef, 13 hogs, and 51 small pigs. Myrtle Point won seven firsts, four seconds, five thirds and half the prize money in farm mechanics, while project awards favored Myrtle Point members in multiple groups.
Mr and Mrs Arthur E Doyle purchased the old Wise ranch at Gaylord from Mrs Mary Richardson and took possession in the middle of last week. Richardson plans for the future are indefinite and has moved to Twin Oaks, the home of her daughter Mrs Milton Ep person.
Sitkum and Brewster Valley endured its worst weekend fire. By 3 pm Saturday, Howe's store remained saved while Albert Christensen barn and hay were destroyed. Three goats died and cattle were badly burned. the Alford home narrowly avoided ignition as flames surrounded properties. House and barn caught fire multiple times but were saved. Several neighbors' homes faced real danger. Telephone lines burned severing Sitkum from Howe's store, and CCC crews helped clear the road for the milk truck to Gravelford.
Mr Harold Shepnerd and two girls with Mr and Mrs Louis Laird and family of Sitkum traveled to Coquille Saturday. They learned the road blocked and returned to Myrtle Point, then Tenmile, via the old Coos Bay Wagon road reaching home that night. Ernest Krewson was at Howe's store and also returned home by the old road.
Iris Virgil Orton was taken into custody last Thursday for having no muffler and fined 33 dollars and costs. Clemmett Gilkison was arraigned before Justice BE on Friday for using improper dealer plates and fined 5 dollars, which was suspended.
Fred Hobson of Dorg drove his cattle across the Lusk bridge Sunday just after noon to escape a blaze that threatened his stock as flames leaped from the burning structure.
A Bald Hill fire razed the barn on the Neer place owned by Frank McMair. The barn was the sole structure on the lot in use and stored hay and wood. Fire damage is under investigation with no word on injuries.
A sequence of fires near Myrtle Point began Saturday afternoon, burning hillside areas and threatening the Renick ranch and nearby properties. Fire crews saved the Ralph Gilkison house, but tools and machinery were lost. Fires spread toward Gravelford and across roads, with several buildings scorched or destroyed. Residents caution about matches, hot ashes, and oil mops kept in closed containers to prevent further blazes.
An airplane attempting a landing near Broadbent school Saturday was disabled. The aviator was uninjured but severely shaken.
Jack Larson of Rhoda Creek a homesteader lost his house and all its contents in a Sunday fire. He saved only a small barn area.
Bandon school plans classes in the undamaged high school building with temporary partitions in the gym. Principal Henry Hartley asks teachers to send their addresses. Mrs Martha Mulkey reports state officials are en route to Portland to aid the Bandon school situation as several rural schools are destroyed or rumored burned.
Through a deal closed by E C Roberts the two Arthur Brown places on Middle creek near McKinley were sold to Joseph and Nora Delon of San Francisco. About 90 acres sold. Delons expect no move for two years but plan to vacation there. Wire from them inquiring if property is in fire zone.
The Myrtle Point community mobilized quickly after Bend county’s blaze. Local doctors firefighters and nurses set up a makeshift station and hospital, sending relief supplies and personnel from Oregon’s hospitals. Major thanks go to Coquille firemen, Verester Ferguson, and police officer Bert Pearson for coordinating aid and remaining vigilant throughout the emergency.
Fire raged Saturday in the Lee district and destroyed the old Meth ing for the peer $0 years. Fox bridge near by was threatened but saved by community volunteers. A cow in a pasture walked through flames to a barn with only slight burns. Homes of Mack Gant Ben Gant Walter Schroeder and M G Sumerlin also threatened. A hilltop fire near Myrtle Point drew the local fire department to the Renick property and other hillside sites Saturday afternoon. A timber owner said the blaze scorched only preexisting hazards and did not destroy valuable timber, though residents remained worried through Sunday.
At a Friday night VFW meeting nominations were made for the upcoming year including Clifford Wilson and JL G Bingham as commander Ray Benham as vice commander Leslie Martin as chaplain Mr Ross as quartermaster and Albert Pancoast as post advocate. Elections are scheduled for October with installation in November.
