A pioneer recalls a long winter near Myrtle Point living with an Indian family and building a home. He notes moving with horses and pack animals, discovering the Sixes mines and the birth of Summereville, with his father teaching him wood cutting and blacksmith tasks as a boy.
Tuesday afternoon about 2 30 three people two men and a woman fired on mail boxes along the Dora star mail route near Lusk bridge. They damaged newspapers and letters. Authorities say the act is a serious postal offense and may lead to fines and imprisonment. The owners are John Lusk W E Bigelow and Mr Parrish. Postmaster Elton Schroeder and box owners urge furnishing new boxes or the matter will be reported to the postal department.
Dewey King bought the George Mullen Bald Hill ranch of about 300 acres above the John Lusk place in the Bald Hill district near Myrtle Point. About 100 acres were homesteaded by Mullen 35 years ago, with springs and a natural reservoir once Myrtle Point’s water source. King plans using the property as a stock ranch after taking possession last week.
Decrees granted in the cases of Cecil E Walch versus Helen B Walch Ferne versus Claude B Boone and M P Marker versus Leslie D Marker. Court records indicate dissolution of marriages with property and support considerations.
Harold Stemmier hunted Sunday and brought back two bucks. Portland visitors Mr and Mrs Carl Rudolf and son Carl Jr. joined L P Linn for Sunday breakfast. Mrs Rose Garrett and daughter Margaret will winter in McMinnville so Margaret can attend Linfield College. Mrs John Dornath and children of Banden visited the Aasens Sunday evening. Mary Mix of Fishtrap dined with Barbara Barnett Friday. Gerald Tichenor of Port Orford visited grandmother Mary Holt at the Guerin home during the Fair. Ferris McRay will visit Corvallis with Mrs McKay later. Minnette Bell, F R Grubblle, W O Campbell and Mr Dekins from Marshfield attended the Fair and called at James Albee's. Misses Priscilla Deyoe Doris Benson Irene Raymond and friends from Lakeside spent the weekend at Warren Deyoe's and attended the Fair. Mr and Mrs Leslie Barklow of Marshfield visited T G Sumertin and attended the Fair. Mrs Charles Wooldridge has pleurisy this week. Elbert Schroeder and Barker family members left on a hunting trip to western Oregon after breakfast at the Barker home. Mrs E F Hoffman visited L M Aasen of Halls Creek Sunday. The Octagon club met with L A LaFlamme and L P Linn gave a book report. Aileen Osborne, student in Eugene, spent the weekend with her mother R H Osborne. Miss Laulee Hendersonott, visiting in Ruth, returned to Myrtle Point with them.
The Elgin Social Club hosts an eight item rummage sale in the area of the Motel Myrtle building once home to Haniocker Pharmacy on Friday and Saturday October 10.
The Woman's club will hold its first meeting next Monday Sept 38 at 23 in City Hall. President Mrs T G Sumerlin calls the gathering with Mrs Marlin Evans to lead opening song and roll call for year plans.
Myrtle Williams sues Marvin Williams for cruelty from a December 7 1833 Vancouver Washington marriage with no children. Port of Coos Bay seeks $57297 with interest from August 1 19%. Cases involve guardianship incompleteness and multiple lawsuits including Jumper divorce and Crown Machine Works disputes. A decree was granted in Martha J McGeorge versus Charles F McGeorge.
The Bridge Grange held a fair at the schoolhouse basement with carnival displays, exhibits, canned goods, and sewing. An amateur program and boxing and wrestling matches in the gym entertained attendees, and organizers hope for an annual fair in Bridge.
The Myrtle Point Lions Club awarded three prizes for best decorated store windows at the Fair. First prize went to Huling dy and Sons, second to Mycthewood Bakery, and third to Whitaker. An out of town coin selected by the Lions window committee determined the awards.
The Coos County Library association met Saturday at the Methodist church. Officers elected include Belle Whitaker president H A Busterud Marshfield vice Edwin Ellingson Jules secretary and William Candlin Coquille treasurer Harriet Long state Librarian attended with new books and reviews. Several ladies toured the Point library to view recent improvements.
Myrtle Point girl Ellen Monrad married Marion Nance of Otis in a September 18 1936 ceremony at Emmanuel Episcopal Church Marshfield. The couple's reception followed with a dinner and band farewell, then they left for Hood River and eastern Oregon before settling in Otis. Miss Monrad, native of Ohio, and Mr Nance, a 1936 Oregon State College forestry graduate, are both from local families and were accompanied by relatives at the event.
Coos County Fair showcased 4-H exhibits with many top finishes. Winners span categories from sewing and clothing to handicraft forestry gardening and culinary arts, with Marion Henderson and Asil Smith awarded half scholarships to 4-H Summer School and Winnifred Newbury crowned style revue champion.
A fall program opens with a gym class at the Junior High School on Monday evening at 7 30 led by instructor Miss Mahalah Kurtz. About nine women attended the first session and more are welcome. A small charge for lights applies and participants are asked to wear tennis shoes.
A man arrested Thursday at North Bend was fined $100 and sentenced to a specified term.
A program and entertainment will be held next Monday evening, Sept 38, celebrating the anniversary of The Powers Odd Fellows and Rebekah lodges. The IOOF and Rebekah lodges have been invited as guests for the event.
Mrs Irene Waldo of St Johns spoke at the Myrtle Point club on Sunday afternoon as an all Townsend speaker. She has led the WCTU in Portland, taught in eastern Oregon, sang Ma Honey Were for You, and performed her piano program. A committee was named to inspect a piano and report next meeting.
Principal reports a 17 percent increase from last year bringing total enrollment to 334. The Junior High adds 61 pupils in a single class, prompting schedule revisions and a new teacher, Miss Beatty of Ashland, to ease workload. With 10 teachers, average class size reaches 33.4 as officials study new family growth and attendance.
The next meeting will be at the V. F. W. hall on Monday October 5.
A string of social notes records Mr and Mrs Smith and family moving into Roseburg area homes. Coquille visitors Mrs Frenk Fieh and James Wilson spent Friday and Saturday with Mrs Roderic Barksow, with James Cornish accompanying to Albany en route to Willamette University in Salem. Ralph Christensen and family of Parversburg joined Eider and Mrs A A Baker for Sunday dinner. K L Stanninger hosted overnight, while Carl Redolf and son Carl Jr. of Portland were weekend guests of Miss Greece Linn. Poney Reman of Burena Califa noted as visiting relations nearby.
