Miss Edith E Manes daughter of Mrs Allard of Portland will wed Dr Edward C Wall Myrtle Point physician son of Mrs H C Taylor of Cottage Grove Best man will be Dr Phillip Stants of Portland classmate. Dr Wall a 1936 University of Oregon Medical School graduate has worked at Mast Hospital since July and plans to continue his wife s work in Portland.
Fire at the Miller residence near a barn in Brewster Valley destroyed the Merrifield home on Saturday night. Ed Merrifield was away. his son woke and escaped in nightclothes. The blaze spread toward a nearby inn but was dampened. investigators could not confirm a cause.
A Junior High Thanksgiving program was presented on Wednesday afternoon as part of an America The Beautiful assembly. The event featured a Thanksgiving play led by students including Tommy Perkins and Marha Evers with scenes about Pilgrim life and gratitude.
Jom Powers resigns from Hennes A Setcede and Sons Funes Volceme on Merle Point and will relocate to Grants Pass to take charge of B Hall Funeral Home. Schroeder has not announced Powers successor.
Austin Dedrick 22 was arrested Saturday at North Bend on a charge of driving while intoxicated with bail set at $200. Joseph Urban alias James Ambrose 23 was taken into custody Sunday at Marshfield to answer burglary not in a dwelling stemming from allegedly stealing a watch from one woman and giving it to another.
The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce will host a banquet and entertainment for the Myrtle Point High School football team and coaching staff. The event is next Tuesday November 30 at Floyd's Cafe. Eugene Laird oversees the athlete sponsor list.
Myrtle Pointer Davenport daughter of A R Davenport of Twin Oaks married Desmond Grace son of A A Grace of Fortuna Calif in Arcata California. Rev Charles Hessel officiated. Attendants included Audrey Davenport Holt and James Bo Smith. Guests included Holt family and Davenport relatives. Couple departed for Fortuna home after a large reception.
The junior high boys in seventh and eighth grades begin their basketball practice season the week after Thanksgiving vacation. They show strong interest and anticipation for the season ahead.
The Townsend pension group gathered Sunday with President M. R R. Lee returning to duty after a two week absence. Elder A. A. Baker opened with prayer and the audience sang America as members received the weekly bulletin and other communications. K. H. Hansen delivered a strong talk after the treasurer’s report. A. H. Bender will lead next Sunday’s program. Dr Gordon Ware, a noted Townsend economist now based in Zillah Washington, will give a talk here in December with date to be announced.
Myrtle Point Red Cross chapter surpasses its membership quota for the year by going over the top. The drive aimed for 126 members and closed Wednesday November 24 with an overall tally well above the goal.
Myrtle Point Woman's Club plans a Monday afternoon meeting at 2 pm in the Presbyterian church parlors for the club year. The program features Mrs. N G W Perkins with music by Mr Eilis Dement and reviews by local educators. Donations of library books are welcomed. Tea will follow.
The Myrtle Point Lions den met at Floyd's Cafe with 18 present to sponsor a basketball team. W H Homes was named manager pro tem and committees were formed to study lighting the athletic field or building new stands. A vote of thanks was given to L. L Jim Powers who leaves for Grants Pass and a commendation letter was ordered.
A baby boy arrived early Tuesday morning to grace the home of Mr and Mrs Marion Nance. Ellen Monrad is the daughter of Mr and Mrs R L Tucker of Myrtle Point. The Nances are now residing in Medford where Nance is connected with the Forestry Service.
E C Barker posted a $16 prize for the largest buck west of the Pacific Highway. Charles Southmayd, a local man, won the district prize of $25 from a large hardware company. Southmayd exhibited a five point 1704 pound Columbia blacktail buck.
Dement Creek road is in very bad condition after last summer’s work with graveling. Cars have been pulled from mud and a fill above Wm Chandlers washed out due to no culvert. People travel on foot. residents hope for repair when weather allows.
The Oregon State Fur Show rules require entry by 10 p m with a 10 cent fee per pelt. Pelt value judged only, with five ribbons and cards per class, Grand Champion awarded, and cups for first prize pelt and Grand Champion. OSFBA officers and committees listed. Coquille unit and Chamber of Commerce backing the first fur show with regional editors aiding coverage.
The Oregon Historical Society sponsors another Beekman Essay Contest on The Voyage of Captain James Cook to the Northwest Coast. Open to girls and boys ages 15 to 18, several prizes are offered.
