Bert Pearsen the city marshal issued a call this week for old clothing or any garments to aid relief efforts. Citizens are asked to bring donations to city hall where Pearsen will distribute them to those in need in the area.
Two Sitkum CCC enrollees narrowly escaped death when a government truck overturned and plunged 50 feet into the east fork of the Coquille river near Abernethy grade at Dora last Wednesday night. They climbed out through the upper window as a current swept them toward brush and shore with help from residents. Ivan Land pulled the truck out with a tractor the next morning.
The Arago Ladies Aid will hold a bazaar Friday Dec 3 at the Arago. They plan to display many beautiful and useful items. Mrs Albert Lillie and Mr David Root will be in charge.
Charles Laughton spent six weeks studying Nero before portraying the Caesar in DeMille’s The Sign of the Cross. The film comes to the Methodist church on Myrtle Point Tuesday December 14 at 7:30 pm with Frederik March Elissa Land Claudette Colbert also in the cast. The production employed more than 7500 extras and bit players.
At the Coos Counts Grange Council meeting in Coquille the group decided to keep functioning and meeting to advise county chapters. They set March first Wednesday for a joint session with North Bayside Grange and fixed December 15 for installation of Panama and subordinate officers at North Bayside. The council urged Pomona Grange to keep using contest methods to advance tasks and requested subordinate granges to bring resolutions for Pomona review.
Mrs Mary Campbell staying with Mr and Mrs N E Bond injured her left hand Tuesday morning when it caught in the washing machine wringer. The fourth finger was torn and two stitches were needed to close the wound.
A Tuesday night blaze at 7 o'clock damaged the residence of Mrs Mary Adams on Maryland Avenue caused by an overheated fire or appliance. Damages were estimated at about $10 with no injuries reported.
Marriage records show Sherman RK Maher and Joan I Mulan of Coquille wed by Justice Clarence Barton. Edward Brown and Evelyn Bark low, and Warren Albertson with Hazel Morris married by ministers in Coquille and Myrtle Point. Complaints filed include Ethel Road versus Mary Frances Norton and A J Radabaugh versus V V Hagedorn and others.
Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce honored the 1937 Coos County football champions with a Tuesday night dinner at Floyds Cafe. Attendees included 60 men, the squad, Coach Rickard, teachers, and business leaders. speeches by Wallace Dement Paul Breuer Gene Benniksen Ray Cook Sam Dement and John Arnold. Out of town speakers were John Warren and Earl Leslie. Clarence Church announced the season financials showing receipts of 410 dollars and a deficit expected after expenses.
Four local farmers sent exhibits to Portland's annual corn show running from November 29 to December. W A McNair of Catching Creek T M Stover of the Roseburg road and F G Hermann with E L Clausen of Broadbent submitted yellow field corn exhibits.
Mrs Win Fite and Mrs Reuben Roupp arranged relief for the editor feared to starve by gathering offers of food. On Friday morning Mrs Roupp delivered four large Giery Monday apples grown on Maple Street, 8 inches long and 3-4 inches wide, to The Heard office for the Nit Wit column.
A Sunday afternoon meeting for pensioners at Tow son County drew one attendee. A H Bender chaired the program committee and arranged a musical program featuring Miss Wash Mea, Mrs W W Baynes, Lloyd Deavers, Herman Nelwin, Arthur B Hermann, Walter Laird, A JL Volkmar, and others. Mrs Buckner was announced as next Sunday's speaker, with members looking forward to it.
The postponed benefit social and dance for Alder Crest school South Catching Creek will be held Saturday evening Dec 4 at 8 30 p m at the school The event raises funds for the school and attendees are urged to come and bring women and girls to participate.
Graydon Crews has been named superintendent of Lincoln Junior High in Coquille, succeeding A L Beck who left for Jacksonville. Crews, a Myrtle Point teacher of physical education and mathematics, has led boys’ activities for four years and is a Southern Oregon Normal School graduate. His wife Naomi Herman teaches near Coquille. Replacement at the junior high is being sought.
About 75 firemen and friends from across the county attended the Coos County Firemen's Association meeting at Coquille City Hall Tuesday night. An interesting discussion of several important matters was followed by refreshments.
The Myrtle Point Odd Fellows lodge hosted a Wednesday meeting for the initiation of C. Guy Mann. About 30 visitors from Powers Coquille and Bandon attended and offered short speeches as part of plans to expand meetings countywide. About 50 people enjoyed lunch afterward.
Attendees at church services and dinners are listed. Mr and Mrs Henry Schroeder attended confirmation at the Episcopal church in Coquille Monday night. A Sunday dinner at Mr and Mrs Elvin Eads included Miss Marc Clinton John Anderson and others. Several relatives visited during Thanksgiving and other gatherings in Myrtle Point and surrounding areas.
The Arago dedication program featured a piano prelude, hymns, prayers, a sermon by Turner MacDonald, choir performances, and a key presentation. Flowers and greens decorated the church, with a choir under Maude Woodyard. An offering of 103 dollars was collected to finish the basement and near-term completion.
The National Tuberculosis association kicks off its annual Christmas Seals drive on Thanksgiving Day, led locally by the Myrtle Point Junior Women's Club and the Coos County health association. Over 40 000 seals have been distributed in Myrtle Point since Thanksgiving, selling for one cent each, with Mrs Wayne Caver and Perkins Drug Store as contact points.
A group of college students returned home for Thanksgiving to Myrtle Point from Corvallis and Eugene. Names include Harriett McKay Earl Brewer Paula Breuer Charles Leatherman Frendy Medlock Merle Randleman Kenneth Leatherman Lela June McDonald Ralph Hufford Burr Monrad Robert Belloni and Milford Smith.
Arago High opens the season Friday December 3 hosting Langloine in a non league game. Girls volleyball prelims and rematches occur December 16 at Langlois. Arago also meets Marshfield High seniors and juniors December 14 at Marshfield, with a league opener December 18 at Coos River. Coach Reginald Menegat returns.
