The proclamation urges a national day of thanksgiving and prayer on Thursday November 26 1789. It cites gratitude for Providence and the formation of government and liberty, calling for prayers for national unity peace and virtuous conduct. Given in New York City on October 3 1789.
The American Legion sponsors a dance at the Community building next Saturday evening with Cedar Grove orchestra providing music. Dancing runs from 9 30 to 12 30 to aid purchase of the new Community hall and invites all who enjoy music to attend.
The Knocking Around column writer acknowledges possible mislabeling of Sheldon Sackett of the Coos Bay Times in a November 10 item. Citing a July 11 1952 Mill Ends memo, the piece apologizes for calling Sackett a philanderer and states the writer is glad to retract the term.
Portland dated report notes Senator Morse accused of attacking President Eisenhower's integrity and voting against him at every turn. The Union Thanksgiving Eve service sponsored by the Church Fellowship will be held at the First Methodist Church Wednesday November 23. The service begins at 8 o'clock with Rev Vernon Miller guest speaker from Church of the Brethren in Fresno California. The public is invited to attend this traditional Thanksgiving service.
Postmaster Milton Schroeder launches the 1955 Mail Early for Christmas drive urging households to start sending cards and gifts now. He notes extra staff and services, stresses complete addresses, air mail deadlines, and advises mailing distant items by December 5 and nearby items by December 10 for timely delivery.
Dora residents packed the schoolhouse Saturday despite rain to support a pupil teacher carnival. Principal Helen Mast reports about 250 dollars net from food and games to fund playground equipment with prizes donated by nearly 100 firms from Myrtle Point Coquille Coos Bay and North Bend. Local residents contributed produce for a farmers market and the white elephant booth. Lasaber booths were funded by Schlatter Brothers and tables loaned by the McKinley Range.
Powers Chamber of Commerce officials led by Jack Bushnell and Kenneth Relfe presented a comprehensive report on federal timber to the Joint House Senate Committee. Myrtle Point merchants will stay open until 9 p m for the last two weeks before Christmas except Christmas Eve and from Dec 1 will open until 9 on Mondays and Fridays, as decided by the Chamber of Commerce. Bill Downing chairs the committee, following his recommendations. Christmas holiday hours begin Saturday Dec 3. City government explained by Frank Meldrum and Al Wyld Jr likened to a nonprofit corporation with the mayor as president and the council as board of directors.
The national Audience Awards poll ends November 27 with ballots due by the Sunday night performance at Hiland theatre. Each family member may vote once per category, ballots collected daily, and Price Waterhouse & Co will tabulate returns from thousands of cinemas.
The Myrtle Point Sportsmen's club hosted a Thanksgiving turkey shoot drawing a large crowd Sunday afternoon with over 100 turkeys and bacons given as prizes. Harold Watzling praised county support and noted the new club house aided the event. If weather allows, a practice shoot starts at 1 pm, and a big prize shoot is planned for December 18.
Predatory animals caused 1 540 known live stock and poultry losses on Oregon farms in the quarter ended September 30. County losses were led by Grant, Baker, Coos, Curry, and Klamath with coyotes, bears, fox and mink, and other predators striking noted numbers. State Senator Mark Hatfield of Salem announced Thursday his bid for the Republican nomination for Secretary of State. Hatfield, dean of students at Willamette University, would pursue integrity and faithful administration to earn public confidence. He has long served in the Oregon legislature since 1951.
