City Receives State Warning On Health Hazard In East Maryland

The Oregon State Board of Health warns the city of an extreme health hazard in the East Maryland Avenue area due to the lack of a sanitary sewer system. The state says the property will be condemned if residents refuse sewer installation. Council approves forming a Sewage Improvement District. The council also approves ownership change at the Myrtle Hotel and Coffee Shop, and the liquor license for the Club. Estimated summer 1968 paving costs total about 31 735 dollars plus interest, with district costs allocated to Several streets. petitions remain in districts where improvements may proceed.

Powers Man Killed in Vietnam War Lance Com Smith

Marine Lance Corporal Ray Smith, 20, of Powers, Oregon, was killed in action in Vietnam on November 19 in Thua Thien province. A 1966 Powers High School graduate, he joined the Marines with George Hayes and Stanley Benn. Services for Smith are pending at Myrtle Point Chapel. Hayes is recovering in Vancouver Hospital.

Knife And Fork Club Membership Grows

Response to the Southwestern Oregon Knife and Fork Club has been enthusiastic in Coos Bay North Bend Bandon Myrtle Point Coquille and Reedsport. Memberships are limited by facilities with few spots left. The non political social dinner club aims to exchange ideas with leaders in business public affairs and professions. City Court Fines and Pleas Report

Lloyd Crook fined 50 dollars for disorderly conduct while Leonard Wright pleaded not guilty to a speed contest. Robert Adams and Nannie Perry cited for basic use violations. Harver Koski forfeited 15 dollars for excessive noise.

Services Held For Powers Immigrant

Powers resident Samuel Zeetz died November 15 1967 in Coos Bay at age 76. He was born October 28 1891 in Yugoslavia and was a retired logger for Georgia Pacific of Powers. Graveside services were held November 18 at Powers Cemetery with Rev Steve Vaughn of the Open Bible Church of Powers officiating.

Former Powers Woman Echo Belle Appleton Dies at 77

Mrs Echo Belle Appleton, born September 24 1890 in Reston, died November 17 at Fairview Nursing Home in Coquille after moving there in 1964. Survived by James L Appleton husband De loss of Prineville son Ben Hardman brother Mrs May Graf sister Mrs Rilley Peterson sister and eight grandchildren. Interment at Looking Glass Cemetery after services at Ann and Michaels Catholic Church with Father Michael Freming officiating.

Enrollment Up 23 Percent At SWOCC Board Meeting

Southwestern Oregon Community College enrollment rose about 23 percent this fall based on the official fourth week report, with 1 776 students in Fall Term reported for reimbursement and 303 7 full time equivalent students. President Brookins noted actual enrollment closer to 1 890. The board discussed faculty salary scales, contract renewal, and a long range campus development plan revision with Skidmore Owings & Merrill at a cost not to exceed 15 000.

Senior Honors Reveal Mixed Academic Standings

A fragmentary report shows juniors with a 3.5 GPA threshold, 6.9 percent named with 6.4 percent in a scheme, and seniors achieving 16.8 percent while 0 percent reached a 3.0 benchmark. Names listed include Mike Backlund and John Nelson among others in the seniors honor context.

Landowners to request land reclassification for grazing rate

Landowners may apply for reclassification to reduce fire patrol taxes if at least 60 percent of the land is open grass. Applications should be sent to the Coos County Classification Committee at the County Extension Office in Coquille, with a December deadline. A disaster unit will tour Myrtle Point December 1 to assist health service outreach, inspired by a plane crash in February 1966.

Myrtle Point High to Offer Pasta Counting Class

Myrtle Point High School begins a 11 week typing class titled Community Omi conduct aa Saalt on January 2. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 30 to 9 pm, with a fee of 918. The 1967 Myrtle Point Bobcats yearbook earned an A plus from the National School Yearbook Association, edited by Evelyn Belanger with co editor Linda Meader, both graduates.
