Sheldon F Sackett moves H P Hornish from executive editor to associate editor and elevates himself to executive editor and page director in a controversial reorganization. Hornish under contract until year end, faces questions over policy shifts while Sackett defends the changes amid criticism from local readers in Coos County Oregon. Myrtle Point hosts Lions Club Sadie Hawkins Day with Dogpatch characters in a carnival style event.
Coos county schedules a four day fair at Myrtle Point from August 18 to 21 1954. Secretary manager Marold Clarno and others returned from the Oregon State fair board meeting in Salem where funding disputes over racing funds were debated.
Douglas McKay urged to stop secret negotiations between the Bureau of Land Management and private forest land owners. Western Forest Industries Association accuses the bureau of excluding others and bypassing the O and C advisory board. WFIA president Ed Kelienberger cites checkerboard holdings in western Oregon. Clyde Shaw of Ked die California sues John F. Cawrse of Remote in federal court for alienation of affection of Shaw's wife Katie Shaw mother of four. Shaw seeks 100000 dollars. alleges Cawrse worth 500000 dollars. The couple were married from August 1938 to October this year.
Arago Parent- Teachers organization stages The Dutch Detective a three act farce at the Arago school gym this Friday at 8 pm. Cast includes Parm Patrick Frank Fisher Meldon Carl Ray Gerbau Oscar Harper Jaylene De Wald Rose Ellis Lorraine Flagel and Mrs Parm Patrick. Admission adults 1.00 children 50c with proceeds supporting the school lunch program.
At about 12 15 Monday Mrs Dora K Howard of Hauser Oregon stepped on the throttle instead of the brakes in a Lincoln Sedan entering Sixth Street from Maple. The car struck Floyd Hall then rammed a Chevrolet station wagon owned by Frank Henry and a Chevrolet passenger car owned by John H Vale. Vale’s car pushed into a parked vehicle. Hall’s car suffered severe damage including the driver side. Howard’s car was disabled with the front end caved in. Damage to other cars depends on mechanical checks.
Merald will be published early in the Thanksgiving week. Corvecpand notes incomplete in the OCR fragment but indicates production and schedule changes for Merald during the holiday period.
Over 120 persons attended the third annual 4 H Leaders banquet at Bridge grange hall last Saturday night. 4 H club girls prepared a turkey dinner with cranberry sauce and favors. Forrest Mulkins acted as toastmaster while Dr James Millar spoke on the A s Attitude Appreciation Adjustment.
The Myrtle Point Sportsmen's Club hosts its annual Thanksgiving Turkey shoot next Sunday at the local trap grounds. Activities start at 10 am and continue until all shooters have had their fill, with lights enabling night shooting. Prizes include turkeys hams and bacon, plus food service and ammunition sales on site. Amateur and professional shooters have equal chances to win.
The Church of the Brethren sponsors Harvest Home Mission services on Sunday November 22. Rev. Leo H. Miller presides at 11 a.m. with a basket dinner in the social hall. Rev. Richard Kellogg speaks at 2 p.m. a special missionary offering follows.
Myrtle Point council adopted a measure levying special assessments on property benefited by Ash Street improvements costing 34634.92. Owners may pay cash or use Bancroft bonds over ten years at 6 percent. The fire chief urged more hose. council approved buying 200 feet of 1 1/4 inch and 100 feet of 2 1/2 inch hose.
Audrey Russell, 17, Myrtle Point High senior, earned cash on a Saturday night babysitting and found a $25 bill among her earnings. She checked the winning number with the Oregonian and plans to use the money for Christmas.
Dick Vines, Myrtle Point police chief, was named March of Dimes chairman for the town. Announcement came from G W McMullen campaign chairman for Coos county during a Myrtle Point visit with Ms. H. Swensen of Coquille. The county drive runs January 1 to January 33 with a big kick off dinner December 9 at Lena Steak House Coquille. Mrs Ton Lefeste and Mrs Elmer Strode of Sitkum will manage that area again this year. Sitkum has led county drives in recent years.
The Herald reports 122 readers and subscribers joined the Sadie Hawkins sale last Saturday at the office with Mrs Ede first in line at 8 20 am. A list of attendees includes A M Mogi Caroline Siercks Eldon Nelson and many others as the office notes changes to the date and plans to reset the new Gates.
