Seals 16 Year-Old Dairy Winner Heads to National 4-H Congress

Walter F Seals of Myrtle Point earns regional 4-H dairy honors as Oregon Washington and Idaho region competitor. He will depart Nov 29 to join the Oregon delegation in Portland en route to Chicago for the National 4-H Club Congress Nov 30 to Dec 6. Sponsored by Oliver Corporation, Seals has a long record in dairy showmanship, including Coos County Fair championships and state fair class wins.

Deducting Charitable Contributions in Tax Rules Clarified

A.G. Erickson Oregon district director clarifies that time or services donated to qualified organizations are not deductible as charitable contributions. Only out of pocket costs and fair market value of donated property are deductible, with a 5 cent per mile standard for using a personal auto. Depreciation, insurance on a personal car, and gifts to individuals are not deductible.

Cat Returns Home After 20 Mile Journey

Pudge the cat, held by Belva Stemmler, returned to Myrtle Point after a 20 mile walk from the Humane Society. He had been taken there by the Stemmlers last Thursday and reappeared Saturday morning, proving his remarkable endurance. Walt Seals, a freshman at Oregon State University, studies wildlife management and helps on the Sun Valley Jersey farm run by his parents. County officials note local 4-H leaders Twin Oaks members Lloyd Davenport and family have long guided youth projects.

MPHS Season Tickets For Basketball Priced At 10 Dollars

MPHS athletic director Frank Grove announces season tickets covering 11 home games priced at 10 dollars. General admission is 1 dollar for adults and 60 cents for students. seniors over 65 receive a free pass. The opening home game is December 6 against Reedsport at Reedsport.

Former MP Man Russell McCall Wins at Weiser in 1967 NBA Rodeos

Russell McCall of Myrtle Point Oregon led the NRA Bareback Riding standings through the season. He rode in 22 NBA rodeos, won at Weiser Idaho the weekend after the fourth of July, and finished with total NBA earnings of 3066.70. He also placed 3rd in Western Fairs Association standings for 2285.36 and earned a saddle and buckle at the NBA convention in The Dalles Oregon December 7 8. His brother Buck finished 9th in Wild Cow Milking and 6th in Bull Dogging.

General Telephone pays $1.54 million in Oregon taxes

General Telephone Company reports 1968 69 property tax payments totaling more than $1 536 000 to 14 Oregon counties. District Manager Bob McKensie says this marks a 22 percent rise from the previous year with $885 000 due to Coos and other counties.

Governor McCall Sets Five Point Beach Plan

Governor McCall unveiled a five point plan after the defeat of No. 6. It calls for stepped up beach housekeeping and vehicle control by the State Highway Department, curbing automobile use on sands, continued beach access funding of 2 million in the next biennium, defense of public prescriptive rights, and defense of HB 1601 zoning rights. The plan was developed with the State Highway Commission and anticipates action by lawmakers in January.

The Navy seeks experienced applicants for a 30 month Seabee enlistment with advanced paygrades. Applicants must be under 40 and meet Navy enlistment requirements. Training at Gulfport Mississippi precedes unit assignment, with open roles for operators drivers mechanics carpenters electricians plumbers welders and surveyors. Oregon lawmakers convene soon to tackle two ballot questions defeated last election. A proposed gasoline tax to enshrine land protection remains to be tackled by the legislature with guidance from highway and land-use studies. Beach rights up to mean high tide stay protected, with court actions pending and state survey directives to consider. The 11 1/3 percent property tax limit was rejected, easing local government strain and opening paths for potential tax reform such as sales or income taxes. Astoria Plan Helps Welfare Recipients Train at Community College

The Astoria welfare program selected 80 low income individuals for training at a local community college. Today 98 percent have left welfare and work independently. Participants included former mental health patients and others with past criminal records or unstable employment histories.
