School Board Narrows Site Alternatives For Spruce Street

The 41 member district board, with Erichsen Associates and the state education planning division, advances plans to remove Spruce Street school and select a 20 acre site amid five options. High school needs, enlarged labs, library, and shops drive the shift toward elementary classrooms to retire Spruce while exploring long term options. The board has not announced a site and continues preliminary planning with Superintendent Joe Stewart and Principal Sy Neugart, tied to a Florence and Eugene education plants visit.

Oregon forest services cut after tax vote and layoffs

State Forester Dwight L. Phipps announced curtailment of Oregon Department of Forestry services after voters rejected the 1968 Legislature tax program. Twenty seven positions will be affected with heavy losses in forest inspection and farm forestry. Further cuts could eliminate entire programs.

Tetanus Clinic Set for November 19 in Myrtle Point and Powers

The Lions clubs of Coos County and the Southwestern Oregon Medical Society sponsor tetanus clinics on Tuesday November 19 in Myrtle Point at the Myrtle Crest school gym 2 to 6 pm with possible extension to 6 30 pm and in Powers at the high school gym 7 to 9 pm. Those who had the first shot in September should return for a second dose and others may receive a shot. Injections by the Coos County health department or local doctors use a hydraulic gun with no needle. Second shot costs 80 cents for return patients and $1 for first timers. assistance is available for those unable to pay.

Timber Tract Tax Law Meetings Set in Coos County

Timber owners in Coos County may compare current taxes with the optional timber tax law at two meetings on November 19. State forestry officials present at 1 30 p m in Coquille for the extension office conference room and at 7 30 p m at the Sixes Grange hall. The option targets owners with under 1000 acres and focuses tax on land productivity rather than standing timber.

Neugart Solo Highlighted In University Symphony

Larry Neugart, trumpet soloist, performs in the Nov. 14 concert at the University of Oregon directed by R S Wagner. The event, presented by the Eugene Wind Ensemble, features John Weinzweig's Divertimento No 5 and celebrates the Eighth Annual Symposium on Contemporary Music with Canadian composers. Neugart is a senior at Oregon's School of Music and son of Myrtle Point high school principal Ray Neugart.

West Coast lumber outputs and orders rise in October

The October report from the West Coast Lumbermen’s Association shows Douglas fir production totaling 6 817 859 000 board feet for ten months, up 1 percent from last year’s pace. Unfilled orders rose 13 percent to 519 006 000 feet, while mills cut inventories about 3.6 percent to 816 300 000 seats.

Plane Crash Victim Roy Kelley Remembered in Coos County

Roy A. Kelley died Monday after a plane crash near Sixes River about 25 miles south of Bandon. The Civil Aeronautics Board will investigate. He lived in the area 18 years, was born October 9 1918 in Idabel Oklahoma, and was a logger for Georgia Pacific. Surviving: wife Cheryl and son Larry of Myrtle Point. father Frank of Tennessee. brothers Clarence of Langtons and Aedor of Phoenix. and Violet Weaver of Springs Texas. Services set for Thursday at 2 p.m. in Schroeder's Coquille chapel with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Coquille.

Masonic Lodge To Honor Educators Friday
