Theft of plants from Rotary planters downtown prompted a reward up to 100 dollars. The pot plants include a hybrid rhododendron and other shrubs. Myrtle Point Garden Club and local groups report repeated thefts of camellia and hybrid plants from plantations near the highway intersections and Rotary planters.
Myrtle Point merchants kick off the Christmas season with Friday and Saturday openings on Nov 29 30. Shoppers can redeem tickets for prizes 25 980 and 75 dollars in script from participating stores. Santa visits on select Saturdays. free movies at Milead and Hiland Theatres. and a large prize drawing plus 12 turkeys on Dec 21.
Voters across Myrtle Point and six other cities answered questions on state tax policy. Ballot items covered school funding, educational costs, tax raises, and legislative session length with mixed support and notable opposition.
Elton Schroeder announced the Henry A. Schroeder Memorial Scholarship for Myrtle Point High School seniors. The scholarship continues on need and merit and will also consider athletic participation, honoring Fremry A. Schroeder’s forty year interest in the school’s athletics.
The Bobcat yearbook at MPHS earned the Medalist award from Columbia Scholastic Press for ranking in the top 10 percent of yearbooks. Judges rewarded layout, copy, photography, and coverage with high marks. This marks the staff’s third yearbook award, following first and second place honors from other associations.
Mrs Kenneth Kuhlman of 2000 Beaver Avenue Klamath Fajis writes she is trying to locate a person believed living in Myrtle Point. She is Phillipe sister of the Kuhlman family.
Myrtle Point explorers Jerry Brodie Joe Buchanan Tom Ralph and Danny Wooley were initiated into high orders of Scouting at Camp Baker’s Fair Ordeal from November first to third. Advisor Vern Wertz accompanied them as they moved into the Order of The Arrow among the Finest Scouts.
A Coos County jury found Dishner not guilty of assault with intent to rape after a seven hour trial. State evidence led by John Eaton described an Oct. 3 incident involving a 14 year old girl near the Southern Pacific railroad. Dishner testified he was home. neighbors Mr and Mrs Robert Vincent corroborated his alibi.
Diane Lee Russell aged 18 of Coquille died in a highway accident between Coquille and Myrtle Point when a car she rode in failed to negotiate a curve. Driver and sole occupants of the car and another rider Janet Hendricks of Myrtle Point were injured. She was taken to Mast Hospital for treatment.
Myrtle Point high school will hear state system of higher education representatives in a special session to inform students about fees and scholarship opportunities at public institutions. The presentation, organized with the school, will supplement guidance services.
Dedication on November 4 marks the completion of a 940 360 construction project for a fish ladder on Middle Creek, the Coquille River tributary. Oregon Fish Commission engineer head Edward K Neubauer notes 88 Coos county firms and agencies contributed 16144 to match state funds. The concrete ladder bypasses an 81 foot falls enabling miles of spawning habitat and earlier fertilized salmon eggs have produced healthy fry. Local chamber of commerce officials supported the ladder push in May 1961.
MPHE will observe National Education Week November 11 to 15 with an open house on Thursday November 14 from 6 to 10 pm in the high school building.
The Leland Barklow residence on Stringtown Road suffered a total loss in a night blaze on an October date. No injuries were reported.
George Castor dies in his sleep at Bridges at the age of 66 hours in his Coos County home. He is survived by no relatives and was a World War II veteran and longtime local resident. Church services are announced for today.
