County farmers will elect community committeemen for the new year and discuss the 103K Agricultural Conservation Program. Meetings will be held at various pools across the county next week with county agent George Jenkins outlining features and goals.
Open New Market Renew at 10 Spruce Street replaces the Dedard Fruit Market. Donald Megale and Wetham Martin Ward from Marahlefield plan a wholesale venture and grey market to stock Myrtle Point with seasonable produce. The rear ground will be opened to tarry all seasonable goods via the foot and produce line.
The Myrtle Point library, led by Librarian Whitaker, celebrated National Book Week with eighth graders. Events ran November 14 and featured activities to promote reading with the theme Reading the Magic High and adventure.
The junior class rehearses a three act comedy titled The Potavia with cast including Pop Harrington Eugene Bartlett Mrs Harrington Grace Skillings Patricia Harrington Ernestine Ludy June McClellan and others. Tickets may be purchased from the college or manager Josephine Doyar.
Multiple couples across Coquille Portland North Bend Marshfield ReedSport and Jackson County received marriage licenses or were married by various ministers including Rev Arthur Jane Rev Oliver Ho Boaler and others. Names include Marvin K Alstott Cathleen OConner Paul Vincent Hazel Amend Floyd Lille Lathervate Clyde Brown Fay Munger Marie Sten Grover Smith Guldie Burnett Anna Holmstrom with licenses issued in Multnomah County Lane County Coquille and Jackson County.
Miss Veroy Kobthagen state supervisor and the Myrtle Point High School board will review the home economics program. The plan provides 300 minutes a week for each girl with a home economics curriculum and supervised shop. Reimbursement to be provided from federal funds, about 3 percent of teachers' salaries.
Numerous clubs and activities fill the junior high schedule with practice and meetings this week. 4 H sewing forestry and woodwork groups organize with new officers and members, while an electricity class and drama and art clubs offer weekly sessions for seventh graders.
A note reports George A McDonald sold his Remote Store and moved into the PW Laird residence on Seaman Avenue near Cemetery Road that week.
Merchants in Coos County handling dairy products were urged at the Dawy Man's Association meeting in Coquille to sponsor dairy products and avoid substitutes during National Milk Week. The group highlighted a 134 million dollar yearly dairy income, urged regular milk testing under Oregon Grading Law, and called for funds to continue Bangs disease or tuberculosis testing. A letter to a Portland paper condemning daily substitutes was planned. A Coquille meeting of the Oregon State Dairymen’s Association set for January 21 22 was announced with a committee to arrange the state gathering.
Westock operators planning to seed range land in Coos county for Agricultural Conservation Program payments must complete seeding by December 1. This final date was set after information from NC Donaldson executive secretary of the State Agricultural Conservation Committee.
A turkey shoot sponsored by Lloyd Lackey of Broadbent will be held Sunday Nov 21 at 10 am at the Myrtle Point trapgrounds on the Roseburg highway across from the Gus Dietz place. A large supply of turkeys geese ducks and chickens will be available for shooting.
Community committeemen of the Coos County Agricultural Conservation association plan an all day session at the county agent's office in Coquille at 9:30 am to prepare for a countywide committee election and review the 1938 program. W E Cross chairs, with C Donaldson attending to assist. the gathering aims to inform farmers about the farm situation and promote soil conservation and stable production to raise farm income.
Mr and Mrs attend the Spanish War Veterans meeting at the Marshfield Armory on Wednesday night. The occasion marked the official visit of the state department president to the Sumner Post and Auxiliary. Mr and Mrs John Feleher and Bir' were present.
A dance will be given Saturday Nov 13 by the Elgin Social Club at the Masonic hall. Invitations issued by committee members Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Raleigh Greene and Mrs. T G. Sumerlin. Coffee and sandwiches to be served late in the evening.
Myrtle Point Bobcats dominated the Bandon Tigers in rain soaked play. Danville and Sprague sparked multiple drives scoring twice while Ellis Cook and Foster contributed on offense and defense. The shutout sealed 26 points as tackle plays and last minute miscues defined the contest.
Lee Ray VFW Post and Auxiliary members from Myrtle Point joined the Sidney Burnett Auxiliary installation in Marshfield on Monday night. Delegates from Bridge and Myrtle Point included Mr and Mrs Albert Pancoast Mrs James Morrison Mrs Clifford Wilson John Fel sher Waldo Carter and Norma Van Feasen.
The Townsend club met Sunday with Vice President H. M. MacLean presiding. N E Bond spoke on the General Welfare Act prospects, closing with a Townsend song. Mrs W Shay and Mira Anna Mitten shared remarks on state movements and junior clubs. Three new members joined as plans for next Sunday’s program and an upcoming authorized speaker were announced.
The Farm Security Administration announces debt adjustment services for Coos county farmers threatened by foreclosure. Applications can be made via the county rehabilitation supervisor in Coquille or the district supervisor in Portland. Services are advisory and seek to extend time, refinance, or reduce principal through negotiations between debtors and creditors to allow continued occupancy and payment of debts.
The Herald warns that only one call will be made to request news items and staff will identify the call as THE HERALD calling for news. The paper thanks contributors and asks to limit telephone visits to the forepart of each week to minimize inconvenience.
Interchurch Fellowship meets at the Presbyterian church to plan a Stay at Home One Night a Week campaign promoting home life and encouraging people to value home entertainment during Thanksgiving week. Mrs Hugh Mitchelmore presents two piano numbers and group singing follows a covered dish supper for about 30 attendees. The table features gladiolas in season decor. A union Thanksgiving service is set at the Church of Christ from 10 to 11 with Rev J H Barr delivering the sermon.
C R Bennett of Gravelford wins praise for a winning potato display and inspires farmers and residents to participate. The Herald window showcases entries, with Tom Hayes of Powers noting Coos County Red potatoes have grown locally for decades. Andrew Ryerson of Catching Creek submitted the week’s leading specimen, a four by four inch potato praised for firmness and non hollow interior across cooking methods.
The October report lists 461 books loaned to children, 0 to adults, and 36 state library books loaned, totaling 1 408. Magazines borrowed 220, new registrations 41, fines 7.56 and rentals 6.52 totaling 14.07 in cash.
The Myrtle Point Future Farmers Swine Cooperative received a registered Chester White boar from Canby last Thursday morning. The prize junior champion boar will enhance their existing nine registered sows and about 14 purebreds. Farmers in the community will gain access to the new sire for their herds.
The Future Farmers of America chapter met at the high school to review the previous year’s work and outline goals for the coming year. Eugene Bartlett led a discussion on successes and shortcomings, followed by a group session on the 1937 38 program. Verlin Herman, fresh from earning the American Farmer degree in Kansas City, spoke on the national convention and delegates’ work, with Schaad presenting souvenirs and trip photos.
The Gravelford Grange and local school plan an 8 o'clock program next Thursday night at the schoolhouse. Miss Ida Ocerding of Coquille will lead the school program with her pupils. The Grange will arrange games and the Woman's Club will supervise the pie social.
A 31 year old man H C Bradford was taken into custody in North Bend on Wednesday for disorderly conduct. He was later released.
Miss Fern Boyles of Myrtle Point serves as adviser for a Girls League gathering in Bendon. The program runs from 8 45 to 3 30 with an address, recreation hour, exhibits of local girls hobbies, and school entertainment. Over 300 delegates are expected.
Mrs Mary B Mix moved last Thursday into the house on C street that was recently occupied by Mrs Myrtle Button and her sons. The Buttons have relocated to the F L Hazelwood house at the corner of Willow and Eighth streets.
Sitkum CCC enrollee Lloyd David Flanagan, 19 from Texas, caused damage at Myrtle Point Bowling Alley after being ejected Saturday night. He pled guilty before Justice C A Barton in Coquille, receiving six months in jail and an $800 fine with suspended sentence pending payment for the broken door and window panels.
Jerry Jones pled guilty and received a five year suspended sentence. C D Bilyes and WL Burton faced arraignment with guilty pleas in a murder case. Clarence Roy was found guilty and faces sentencing by a court on a Friday docket. another defendant is set for a December 6 sentencing.
