Oregon Senate and local races show mixed results in May vote

In Myrtle Point, voters backed Robert Duncan over Hatfield 419 to 325 in the U S Senate contest. Robert Straub defeated Tom McCall 430 to 312 in the state race though McCall led statewide. John Dellenbeck narrowly defeated Charles Porter for Congress in the Fourth District. James Bedingfield Jr won reelection in the 16th District Coos County. Coos County commissioners elected Walter Barklow Loanie Van Elsberg and William L Miller. Erwin Wilberper won the mayoral race amid a withdrawal and nine write ins. Three new city council members were chosen joining incumbents. Results remained provisional with Strawn leading by 200 to 300 votes pending further counts. Port of Coquille results noted with ongoing updates.

Laird Represents Coos County At Oregon Association Meeting

Ivan Laird from Stikum attends the annual Oregon Association convention in Seaside. City Council Delays Street Vacation Vote November 7

The council postponed action on vacation of the alley behind Mobile and Shell stations until indemnification is secured. At the same Nov 7 meeting Chief Lewis Floyd’s resignation was accepted and Merlyn Hathaway will become chief on Nov 1 with Les Knight acting until then. Winter water rates will return in December and Mrs. Harold Stemmler resigned from the library board with Mrs Lehmanowsky to fill the term.

Chamber Urges Businesses to Close on Armistice Day

At a North Point Chamber of Commerce meeting on November 7 the group urged all businesses to close on Armistice Day. Tickets are on sale for MPHS basketball games with most at $10 and reserved seats in the balcony or bleachers. MPHS athletic director Frank Grove says tickets are available at the high school office. The Bobcats’ first game is December 2 at Beedsport, with the first home game December 9 vs. Reedsport. Mrs. Robert A. Ley of the hospital, admitted about a month for a serious heart condition, is reported as a patient. her husband Dr. Robert A. Ley survives. Also noted: Santa will be in town December 3 and 10. The next noon meeting of the Chamber will be at Myrtle Hotel on November 21 with guest speaker Myr Pawl Shepard of Safety Education, discussing Oregon industrial safety and Workmen’s Compensation. Myrtle Point high school students received their first report cards on Wednesday, November 9. parents are urged to review them. Quarterly reports will be issued on January 25, April 8, and mailed June 7.

Board Begins Crusade Over District Attendance and Spruce School

The Myrtle Point School District attendance committee met the School Board on November 2 to review the proposed school and the condemned Spruce School. Supt. Joe Stewart presented building and site statistics. a discussion followed. The Board will meet with district PTAs to present data and hold discussion periods for attendees.

Ada M Moore aged 63 died recently. Born January 21 1900 in Carewel Idaho she moved to Martic Por n with family in 1936 and to Coquille in 1941 where she lived since. Funeral at 1000 am Tuesday at St James Episcopal Church Coquille. Survived by husband John A Moore Coquille son Wallace L Pleasant Hill California daughter Marion L Slack Coquille sisters Mrs Joe Staples Ontario Oregon and Mrs Charles Brewster Boise Idaho two granddaughters four grandsons and many nieces and nephews.

Death of Coos County Resident Edward Sewell 71

Edward Sewell 71 of Coos County died November 4 in Myrtle Point. Born February 10, 1895 in Centralia Washington, he moved to Oregon about 56 years ago and worked for RE. Porrie Logging Co. He was a member of St Marks Episcopal Church Myrtle Point, where funeral services were held November 8 officiated by Father Bruce Spencer. Interment followed at Myrtle Point Cemetery. Survived by sister Ada C. Lozier of Portland and many nieces and nephews.
