Chamber of Commerce members voice displeasure at street parking a problem shared by many cities. Merchants and employees clog spaces meant for customers while removal of meters hinders enforcement. City leaders discuss off street parking options as council razes a Maple Street property.
The Hall home of William Mall on Weekly Road was burned to the ground late Tuesday evening with all furniture and pets lost. Deputy Summers noted the fire burned hot and fast, with no firefighting aid responding. the family was away visiting in Roseburg and hunting trips elsewhere. An investigation continues into the unknown cause.
Veterans Day events unfold Tuesday with VFW posts in Myrtle Point and Coquille hosting potluck dinners at Catholic Hall and Elks Club breakfast. District 9 World War I veterans meet in Bandon with hot dishes and a program. Legion auxiliaries hold hospital gifts drive and a Colony dining room breakfast. Local chambers decide on closures. Post Office, schools, City Hall and banks will close.
The Harris Street Walk signal confuses children who dash across before it turns. Police Lt Merlyn Hathaway and City Manager Ben Nichols said only the state can convert to a fully automatic signal, but the highway department won’t due to low traffic. Commuters call the setup a real headache and a mess, with schools asked for cooperation.
Drivers’ tests scheduled for Wednesday at City Hall in Myrtle Point with session times at 9 am and 4 pm. Residents wishing to obtain driving permits must file applications well in advance to secure testing time and complete the required review.

Myrtle Point City Council approved drafting an ordinance to create a Police Sergeant to act as second in command to Chief Hathaway. The move, urged by the Police Committee led by William Winningham, aims to ensure leadership in the chief’s absence and improve department administration. Salary cited around 8630 per month. Council also authorized indigent defense services with Berg, Berg, and Walsh at 985 per case or 60 per trial day, following a Supreme Court ruling. Judge Leona Shields noted two welfare cases pending requiring aid and written oath of indigence.
The Community Congress for Progress advisory committee shifts its meeting to Wednesday at 7 30 PM at Myrtle Point High School Library to discuss youth as the topic. Attendees from School District 41 include youth leaders 4 H FFA Scouts counselors and parents with a committee to draft questions for a forthcoming questionnaire.
City Council and City Attorney move to hold owners and youths to same rules. Under 21s would be barred from entering or loitering in bars and lounges except for delivery workers or spouses accompanying a 21 plus partner. Bartenders must not serve minors and licenses can be suspended for violations.
Postmaster Milton Schrader urges Myrtle Point residents to mail care packages by November 15 for Christmas delivery. Letters and cards may arrive later. Names of local service members are listed, inviting neighbors to write and support those in Southeast Asia.
