Veteran journalist George E. Scott joins the Myrtle Point Herald as editor with publisher Ralph Day remaining as editor emeritus. Scott began in 1941 at the Bismarck Tribune and served as a World War II tank officer before earning a BA in journalism from George Washington University.
A three person committee was named by Homer Peterson chair of the Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce to explore forming a development corporation for the area. Ben Nichols will chair the group with Frank Meldrum and Charles Pechlitz as members. Peterson was authorized to appoint the committee at the chamber meeting held October 20.
A Chamber spokesman outlined forming a local development corporation with 10 percent local lands and 90 percent federal funds. The group would examine legal and financial feasibility and may raise money by selling shares. Economic development corporations have been successful elsewhere.
Myrtle Point youngsters will march from Maple Primary School through downtown and back for a ghosts and goblins parade with the Chamber of Commerce giving out treats. Maple school rooms host post parade parties. A PTO carnival at Bridge School starts 7 p.m. Saturday. No UNICEF event this year due to staffing. Police warn trick or treaters to play it safe as local football game occurs that night.
Melvin Zumwalt was named Tuesday night to lead the Community Progress Congress as co chair. Dr Robert Haug and Mrs Dorothy Guerin were named as co chairs with several Myrtle Point High School youths forming a school group to pursue a youth recreation center and several committees.
The Myrtle Point School District 41 board discussed investment methods Monday in the Administration Office on Spruce Street. County Treasurer Edward Stevenson and banker Charles Poshlits were present and outlined how county funds from timber yield and other sources could be pooled with local funds to earn higher interest, with certificates over 100 thousand dollars yielding more return.
William White co owner of Pyramid Block Company on Stringtown Road reported a theft to Coos County Sheriff's office last Saturday. The Friday night theft included a complete set of acetylene tanks torches gauges two electric drills a half inch and a quarter inch. A cart for the acetylene tanks was found in a field about an eighth mile down the road from the plant with the tanks stripped away.
Myrtle Point residents are asked to contribute to a holiday remembrance list for servicemen in Vietnam this Christmas. The Herald invites readers to fill the adjacent box with names and return it to the editor for printing.
Fred Gross of Myrtle Point, president of the Western Oregon Livestock Association, will preside at the 34th annual meeting at the Pony Village Motor Lodge in North Bend on November 13 14 and 16. The program includes talks on water and air pollution, Argentina livestock, tansy ragwort control, and nitrogen cycle in forage, with a banquet at 7 30 p.m. Coos County livestockmen have long led the association.
Congressman John Dellenback urged a House Judiciary subcommittee to approve a bill to let the U S District Court sit in Coquille for maritime and admiralty cases. He argued the region lacks a federal court and would save litigants travel and per diem costs by using a nearby court with state circuit court support.
