The Myrtle Point Lions Club announces the grand opening of the town's first skating rink at the Community Building on Sunday, June 2. Admission is 90 cents for skaters with skates, 35 cents if you bring your own. open three times weekly with separate sessions for children and adults, supervised by Lions committees.
Forty seniors will receive diplomas at the annual commencement in the new high school gym tonight at 8. Col Earl Osborne of the USAF will be the speaker. Valedictorian is Geranna Stevens and salutatorian Patsy Meyer.
The May 27 Salem report notes Senate changes to the house tax plan cut corporate excise taxes for manufacturers by a 33 percent personal property tax offset and quietly killed inheritance gift and assault taxes that would have been punitive, improving the program overall.
The Dunns party ended with disappointment as a hoped for photograph failed to develop. An engraver notes the image was present but the battery time misfired, leaving only a dim outline.
Keith Schroeder Glen Kissell and Don Bowwers will attend Beaver Boys State at Oregon State College in Corvallis from June 6 to 15. Keith is sponsored by Myrtle Point Post 38 of the American Legion, Glen by the Myrtle Point Lions Club, and Don by the Myrtle Point Rotary Club and Junior Chamber of Commerce. The program selects outstanding high school students to learn municipal and state government through regular classes.
In a tirade against public power zealots led by Senator Wayne Morse the writer denounces the amortization tax granted to Idaho Power Co during dams construction on the Snake River. He dismisses Morse's attacks on President Eisenhower as unpatriotic and defamatory.
Gene Owens defeated Al Hall to win the 36-hole Spring Handicap Championship at Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club. Newcomer to the course, Owens trained hard for the win as Andy Richardson and Jack Orr earned final-flight championships, Leroy Robinson's illness left Hewlett match undecided, and the club prepares for the fall event and annual officer elections.
Coos County Fair Board invites residents to name the annual parade theme with the winner receiving free gate and grand stand tickets for the winner and family. Last year's theme was Cool Cavalcade and suggestions are on file until a closing date. The winner will be announced after the committee selects the best entry and Herald photos the winner.
Noble Adamek of Powers took first place with Howard Post, also of Powers, second in the teen-age road event held in Coquille. Jerome Johnson of Bandon finished third. Contest saw entrants from Myrtle Point, Powers, Coquille and Bandon. Adamek advances to the state drive-off June 8 in McMinnville with LeRoy Griggs as event chairman.
The Diebold Lumber Co mill will close permanently starting today due to lack of raw materials. Owner Carl Diebold plans to ship part of the saw mill equipment to Smith River California for use at another Diebold mill.
Surveys by the Bureau of Public Roads and comments from The Herald weigh the Agness to Powers highway as cheaper to build and better for timber markets. Officials consider impacts on tourism and local residents, noting powers route would connect Agness with Myrtle Point and Coos Bay while reducing river disruption.
The American Legion warns that a 1957 Communist campaign seeks to weaken or repeal the McCarran Walter immigration law. National action is urged with posts and auxiliaries told to write and phone senators and congressmen while phonograph records and radio spots push the message.
The deed records the sale of Curry County real estate held by the Lloyd Corp to U S Plywood Corp for about 1 million dollars. The transfer covers roughly 30 000 acres of timberland and 4 000 to 5 000 acres of island lands with Rogue River frontage and tidelands. No land use changes planned immediately. a survey will precede decisions.
Three Myrtle Point area students will receive degrees at Oregon State College on June 3 during the 88th commencement. Theodore Paul Haberly, Myrtle Point, and Homer Carl Millard, Powers, will earn master of education degrees. Louis Monte Lund of Gaylord will receive a bachelor of science in agriculture. Oregon State will confer about 1255 degrees this year, including 35 doctorates, 178 masters and roughly 1040 bachelors. President A L Strand will deliver the class address at the 10 a.m. ceremony in the Coliseum with a June 2 baccalaureate service at 11 a.m. both to accommodate attendees.
PP and L brings in C Bie mond an Amsterdam water works director and hydrologist to study dune aquifer potential near North Bend for a new industrial water supply. He outlines Amsterdam dunes extraction methods including 500 wells and canals and a deep fresh water lens that floats above sea water, and notes Rhine river pumping to sustain demand.
Graydon T Crews will be listed among Oregon State College graduates to receive an advanced degree at commencement on June 3. He will be awarded the Doctor of Education. He taught in Myrtle Point from 1934 to 1937, then was principal at Coquille Junior High until 1941, served in the navy through 1945, returned to Myrtle Point as teacher and principal 1946 to 1948, then led the Oregon State science student counseling program. He and Mrs. Crews, with two daughters, have lived in Corvallis for nine years. Mrs. Crews is the daughter of Mrs. Minnie Hermann of this city.
The Lions plan their annual golf meeting at Ullle Valley Golf & Country Club with an afternoon tournament for members and guests. Dinner in the clubhouse follows at 8 p.m. Green fees are 50c and include a club set for nonmembers, per Buck Elliott. Prizes will be awarded at dinner. the first tee off is at 4 p.m. with Gene Owens, Jack Orr and Dick Van Dine as the tournament tee.
Newly formed Myrtle Point Jaycee unit plans charter night Saturday June 7 at the Community Building fair grounds. A dinner and dance will accompany chartering as the 77th Oregon Jaycee club with officers to be installed. State president Rudy Enbusk will present the charter, Don Hagedorn will MC. Members from Coquille Port Coquille Newport Roseburg Bay Area Willapa Springfield and other chapters attend.
Advertisement states Bob Hurt purchases Louis Floyd stake in Brookdale Dairy. The notice notes Wheeler’s operation linked to the business for 12 years and Hurt’s involvement for five years. Kentiae ees the same.
