Bishop Dagwell of Portland will occupy the pulpit at St Marks Episcopal Church in two Sunday services on June 9 at 7 am and 11 am. The previous Sunday’s pulpit was filled by Father Peter Dally of Bandon while Pastor Bruce Spencer took a month’s vacation, traveling to Berkeley with his family.

Local prep players return home to face the two teams as planners stage special entertainments in the Bay area for the game. Athletic directors Keens and Harris express pleasure at the return of the Frosh and Rooks.

The Myrtle Point council votes to curb loose dogs with a city dog control campaign aided by the county sheriff. Water rates rise about 21 percent under Ordinance No. 713, averaging from 3.30 to 4.00 per month including sewer charges, to fund old main replacements and expanded reservoirs. An improvement district for Maryland Avenue curb, gutter, and paving is proposed with owner costs not to exceed six dollars per lineal foot.
Camp Myrtlewood will open this Sunday afternoon for a full summer program. Located 3 miles from Bridge along Rock Creek, the Oregon camp has run for over 20 years and is operated by the Church of the Brethren. Grounds include seven cabins two dorms and a utility unit with showers. A new bridge across Rock Creek and a water dorinator were added this spring. More than a thousand people are expected to use the camp this summer with groups planned.
14-year-old James Thomas son of Dr and Mrs M H Thomas scored a hole in one while teeing off No 9 at Coquille Valley Golf & Country Club during the Junior Golf Championship. He faces Danny Elliott in the finals this week after defeating Timmy Elliott.
The City of Roses in Portland Oregon announces a major festival from June 12 to 16 with the Rose Parade set for Saturday June 15. Crews assemble float frameworks across the Northwest and decorate them with fresh flowers just before the parade. Portland High School may crown Dean Queen of Rosary on opening day June 12.
Volunteers and groups fund eight Myrtle Point Scouts to Philmont in New Mexico and one to the National Jamboree at Valley Forge in July. Activities include a Black Light tap show at Myrtle Crest School, a rummage sale at the Scout building, a scrap iron drive through June 25, and two Methodist Men dinners this month. Community support urged for the E. C. Barker Memorial fund aiding scouting.
The Myrtle Point High School honored 40 graduates in a May commencement held at the new gymnasium. Miss Geranna Stevens and Miss Patsy Meyer spoke as valedictorian and salutatorian. Col Earl Osborne of Riverside Air Base delivered the commencement address.
Local contest at Marshfield High School gym on Saturday night June 29 crowns Miss Coos County. Winner earns trip to Seaside and a chance to vie for Miss Oregon, with a $1,000 scholarship also offered though not part of the county title.
The Hiland theatre announces baby contest photos will be displayed in the lobby this weekend. Visitors can view the images during theater hours and enjoy the community event.
