Norman K. Hamilton, a former Myrtle Point boy and Myrtle Point High School graduate, was named to the Portland city schools board. He fills the unexpired term of Dr. George Ebey, who left to become a Houston superintendent. Hamilton previously served as assistant superintendent in charge of curriculum in Portland Public Schools.
Rev. S N Breitenstein of Coquille delivered the baccalaureate sermon to forty two Myrtle Point High School graduates on Friday evening. He urged that the future of America rests on the observance of the moral law and faith in God. He told graduates they carry the responsibility for liberty and the world’s future. The program was held in the high school auditorium.
War Veterans and Auxiliary plan Memorial Day ceremonies Saturday May 30 with American Legion and VFW. Members meet 9 am at Legion Hall, then process down Spruce to the bridge for memorial rites and taps, wreaths at sea graves, Norway and Myrtle Point Cemeteries, and clean up graves night May 29 at 7:30 pm.

Southern Coos County residents are urged to attend Horace Heidt’s show on Monday at 8 p.m. The Myrtle Point Active Club held a lively meeting at the County Club outlining ticket sales and event prominence for the fundraiser.
Two Myrtle Point High School seniors earned top honors for the Class of 53. Monte won valedictorian honors for highest grades, while the other student received salutatorian distinction.
Enthusiastic preparations for the 1953 Myrtle Point Interchurch Daily Vacation Bible School as teachers are secured. The program runs two weeks starting Monday, June 1, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. each weekday with divided classes at the Presbyterian, Church of the John Freiberg, and Christian churches.
Myrtle Point pupils across three elementary schools have purchased defense stamps totaling $1,030 over the past three months as part of a PTA sponsored drive. The effort aims to educate and raise funds for national defense.
