A record crowd packed into Myrtle Point High School last Wednesday for the class of 1933 commencement. Dr John Shull of Oregon State College gave the address urging graduates to face a tough world with integrity while striving for honorable success.
Dr Grant McClellan 76 of Myrtle Point died quietly at 2 20 p m May 30 after a long illness. He was born in Chesaning Michigan served in the Spanish American War and practiced dentistry 28 years retiring in 1943. Survivors include his wife Rachel Anma two daughters James Hawkins Loyal Allen a son Grant McClellan Jr U S Coast Guard three sisters and three brothers and three grandchildren. Private funeral services will be held at the Grants Pass crematorium. The family requests no flowers.
Mrs Roush and guests at Larry Lucas lodge on the Rogue reported about 49 men fishing for salmon over the past weekend with a total catch around 120 pounds. A 28 pound salmon is noted though whether Am or his wife landed it remains unconfirmed. Mrs Roush reportedly caught the smallest salmon Lucas had seen, and the fish are in cold storage for months of meals ahead.
The Daily Vacation Bible School, opening in city churches on Monday, claims the largest enrollment yet with about 150 youngsters on day one and expected to reach 200 by week’s end. The two week program ends with a joint program Friday evening June 12.
A blaze Saturday afternoon likely started by a short in the automobile ignition destroyed Bill Downing’s 1947 Mercury and the attached garage at his Ash Street home. Insurance covered the damage. Downing credited the Myrtle Point fire department for a quick response and effective suppression preventing spread to nearby structures.
In Arago on Friday evening a group of mothers and 4-H girls participated in a large auction event. The photo lists participants across three rows including Shirley Patrick Kathleen Ellis Carol Jean Henshaw and others with Bob Hogan as toastmaster and dairy club leader.
The second annual Coos County Livestock Tour will visit several southern Coos county ranches on Sunday June 14 starting at 9 30 am. Highlights include Hereford cattle sheep herds improved pastures irrigation drainage silage feeders brush control and livestock management discussions. Sam Dement will chair the event with Mrs T D Guerin Jr as secretary and lunch is not provided.
Members of the Church of the Brethren invite the public to the dedication of their new Myrtle Point church building on Sunday at 2 30 PM. The structure stands at Seventh and Rose streets on the former Sneg Bena property, erected about three years ago, with a program including piano, hymn Glorious Things of Thee, prayers, scripture readings, and remarks by Rev. G wieit and trustees chairman Garieig.
A drivers license examiner will be on duty in Myrtle Point at city hall on Wednesday June 10, 1953 between 10 a m and 3 p m.

At a long Coos County Fair Board meeting at Tanglewood the group backed a 1953 centennial theme for county events including dedicating the fair to pioneers and coordinating a special parade. A work party was set for June 13 to advance the 4-H building project amid volunteer shortages and weather delays.
The Myrtle Point Saddle club invites county residents to the rodeo dance on June 6 at the Oaks pavilion on the fair grounds. Lou Franco and his Happy Valley Boys perform 9 38 to 1. Admission is 120 including tax. Members meet June 5 at 8 pm for a brief meeting and hall cleanup. refreshments and music provided.
City council and library board discuss architect's design for a proposed new building. Officials and residents attend as plans for city hall use are evaluated and debated amid questions of practicality and funding.
Memorial Day services were held in Point with joint American Legion and VFW participation. A 9 30 parade featured color guards firing squads and auxiliaries, marching to Spruce Street Bridge for rites led by Rev. Robert McDonald. A wreath was then placed at local cemeteries by legion and VFW members and others.
