Charles Hoffman showcases a single buck antler grown into a small tree. The unusual find, likely aged from shed antlers, rests embedded in the trunk and will be crafted into a table lamp after trimming and varnishing. The item is a rare forest oddity observed by woodsmen. Continued on Page Nine.
A large Douglas fir, 8 ft 2 in butt by 6 ft 8 in top, 44 ft long, holding about 10000 board feet, was felled at Catching Creek for Coos Bay Lumber Co. Brownie Coldiron of Powers handled the log, largest he has logged. Local store owners Lans and Leneve sold Remote store and post office to Powell neaster Bridges.
Plans completed for the Daily Vacation Bible School to run Monday June 1 through Friday June. Mrs Theodore Smith and department heads organized sessions at local churches with superintendents for Intermediates Mrs Kenneth Galloway Juniors Mrs John Marrs Primary Mrs Lloyd Laswell Beginners Mrs Darrell Brodie Nursery Mrs Glen Wolfe. Parents urged to attend the opening.
Myrtle Point city council calls for bids to build a sewage treatment plant and 12 to 15 inch interceptor sewer in conjunction with Coquille. Bid deadline is 8 p m June 8 1953 at Myrtle Point city hall, with plans available for $30 deposit.
In the Spring Handicap at Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club the Divot Diggers completed play with parings announced. First Flight results include Chet Noyes over Jack McLarrin and Hank Burr over Dr. Robert Ley. Second Flight saw Bob Kralicek beat Mrs. Parm Patrick and Andy Richardson win by default over Vern Estelle. Third Flight features Mrs Cecil Patrick over Bob Harris and Ann Woodward advancing by bye. Fourth Flight includes Mrs Harvey ers over Fred Holameyer and George Hall advancing by bye. Games set for Sunday include Burr vs Dettman and Downing. National Golf Day on Saturday May 33 invites participation from Julius Boros and others with a $1 entry fee.
Community Band under Spenny Ross will present a free concert at the Senior High School auditorium next Monday at 8 p.m. The program includes music and a skit The Shooting of Dan McGrew for entertainment. Community members urged to attend and support the band.
Postmaster Milton Schroeder announces examinations to fill a substitute clerk position at the post office. Interested applicants should contact him for complete information and must apply before the closing date of June 1.
The Rotary Club at Myrtle Hotel hosted 42 Myrtle Point High School seniors with instructor A L Kit Kittredge. President Breuer urged education beyond high school and college aims to equip youths for future careers. Raymond Miller led the class, introducing Shirley Toby and Ellen Strode for vocal and piano performances.
Hiland Theatre unveils a new feature titled the 3d Dimension with the film A Day in the Country at Myrtle Point. A press agent touts a groundbreaking three dimensional experience without polarized glasses, promising a novel cinema moment for Southern Coos county audiences.
Myrtle Point members joined the thirty second annual state BPW convention in Grants Pass. Mrs. Downing was re elected finance chairman for a second term. Attendees from Myrtle Point included Mrs J E Belloni Beulah Brown and others. The group won a merit citation for projects and a health and safety award with Mrs Myers named to a state committee on district division.
Sixteen Myrtle Point volunteer firemen dined at the Myrtle Hotel with Fire Chief John Fellner as speaker. The retired Portland firefighter gave a pep talk and led an inspection of the hotel, detailing hazards and how to prevent fires, minimize property loss, and save lives.
Coos County Livestock Association announces its annual livestock tour set for Sunday June 14. The event begins at 9 30 a m at the Tom Guerin ranch with a picnic dinner to follow at Albert Powers Gaylord ranch where Powers will provide coffee. Sam Dement chairs arrangements and a full program will be announced later.
Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce supports dedicating the 1953 Coos County Fair parade to the pioneers in honor of Coos County's 100th birthday. The group notes Coos County was created December 22, 1853 and the fair is the county's all‑county project.
Seniors of the Class of 1953 plan the annual Senior Prom at the Myrtle Point High School gym Saturday night at 9. Red Jordan and his orchestra will provide dance music. Pro committees include Invasions, Vonnie Scott, and others handling tickets, refreshments, and decorations.
Two registered Jersey cows owned by H A Hoyt Myrtle Point Oregon earned top marks on the Herd Improvement Registry test. Royal Kola Glow produced 8002 miles of milk with 11 pounds butterfat at age 2 years 10 months. Western Valley Beauty yielded 8668 pounds milk and 538 pounds butterfat at age 2 years 2 months. Tests, supervised by Oregon State College for The American Jersey Cattle Club in Columbus Ohio, exceed 600 pounds butterfat at mature 6-year, twice-daily 306-day basis.
Harrison Bryant of Myrtle Point high school won the 1953 state pole vault championship at the Corvallis track meet with 12 feet 1 inch. He set a Springfield district record of 12 feet 1% inches on May 11 and previously broke county and school marks. Bryant, the son of Mr and Mrs Myrle Bryant, is praised by Coach Petersen for his work ethic and training.
