Stores Close Saturday for Memorial Day Holiday

All stores and most businesses will close Saturday for Memorial Day. Shoppers should plan week end purchases as shortages and travel demand may affect weekend activity.

Walt Kreuger Heads Legion

The local American Legion post elected Walter G. Kreuger as commander for the coming year to succeed C. J. Morgan. Officers to be installed June 8 include George Hoffman vice commander J. A. Parrish adjutant F. L. Moon finance officer Harry G. Dement and C. J. Morgan master-at-arms. The post backed admitting World War I veterans into the Legion if approved by other posts and the national convention. Plans were announced to build a kitchen and facilities on the north side of the hall with Kreuger as building committee chair.

Chrome Buying Under Way At Coquille Stockpile

The chrome ore stockpile for southwestern Oregon is established at Coquille after several site attempts. Weighing scales are set east of Coquille on the Roseburg highway with a master to supervise. trucks weigh en route to stockpile and samples are sent to Portland for assay. Miners must present a notary affidavit per lot and keep ore in separate piles.

Typing Pins Awarded at Union High School

Miss Beatrice Evans announced pins for typing proficiency at Union High. Beginning typists earning silver pins typed 40 to 50 wpm with at most 8 errors. gold pins went to those over 60 wpm. Second year students with 50 to 60 wpm earned gold pins.

Jurors Drawn For June Term Circuit Court

Jurors to report at 10:00 a m Monday June 1 for the June term were announced by County Clerk L W Oddy. The list names jurors from Myrtle Point Coquille Bandon North Bend Marshfield and other communities with occupations including housewife baker service station clerk and merchant. Donations of old ghosts and prison cases for first aid training are being collected by Edgar Rickard at Steel's Laundry or Sempert's Drug store for Boy Scout pickup.

USO Drive Planned For Next Week

Local chair P. C. Roper announces a June start for a USO fundraising drive targeting a $6 000 county quota and $2 million national goal. The campaign will cover business and residential areas and be led by the Woman's Ambulance Corps and First Aid group with support from Powers community volunteers.

Gas Rationing Plan Abandoned By Government

The planned gasoline rationing program set to begin June 1 was cancelled by the responsible agency on Monday. Retailers in Oregon and Washington still operate under the previous two thirds quota and gasoline remains available to the public as before. The government may pursue rationing again later in the summer.

New Manager at Thrift Store Takes Over June 1

Ed Miles of Coquille will assume management of the Thrift Grocery on June 1 as Hamilton Thrift retires to join the Army. Miles will live in the Tanner house vacated this week. He has four years at the Coquille Thrift Grocery and extensive grocery experience.

Civic Body First Donor To USO Fund

The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce met at the Jack Jill Cafe at noon to vote a 25 dollar donation to the USO after Perry Roper, chairman of the local committee, presented the cause. It was proposed to use the nearby service club location.

Red Cross Kit Makers Sought for Campaign

Mrs. H. H. Thomas, local chair of the Red Cross kit committee, seeks at least ten organizations to undertake kit provision in the campaign to raise 200 from the county. Each kit is to contain a box of cigarettes, oil, envelopes, paper, gum, waterproof items, and other essentials.

Forest youth squads form under state forester plan

In Marion county youths are urged to form squads of five or more for training and fire response under a program from the State Forester's office in Salem. The movement aims to organize young groups across areas and clubs to learn official procedures and gain readiness against fires.
