School Bands To Perform Tonight

Marine Corporal Hayes Injured in Vietnam Sweep

Marine Corporal George W Hayes son of Mr and Mrs George W Hayes participated in a three day sweep south of Da Nang as part of the Second Battalion First Marine Division. The mission reported 17 enemy killed and 32 suspects questioned. He was wounded and evacuated to a Saigon hospital. no further details available.

Hogan Captures State Speak-Off Title at Myrtle Point

Walter Hogan, Myrtle Point High School senior, won first in the Oregon state speaking contest in Eugene. He earns a $500 college scholarship, after already receiving a $100 district prize. alternates were Patricia Aldrich and Mike Baxter. Hogan will speak at the Realtor Northwest Convention.

Mrs Mayberry Named New Librarian

Mrs Gene Mayberry was chosen head librarian at Flora M Laird Memorial Library replacing resigning Loyd Wells who will move to Medford. Mayberry, from Pendleton in February, is an Oregon native and mother of three. she starts July 1. Wells becomes assistant circulation librarian in Medford. Waters Dies Following Logging Accident

Arthur Waters aged 35, longtime Myrtle Point resident and logger, died last Friday in North Bend after a logging accident on the Coos River the prior Wednesday May 17. A Korean War veteran and Eagles Lodge member, he is survived by his mother, sisters, and brothers. Services were held at Mills Funeral Home with internment at Ocean View Memorial Gardens.

Miller Chosen for National Defense Education Institute

Miller, a Myrtle Point history teacher, joins 30 educators from twelve states at Florida University for the National Defense Education Act program. The institute runs June 19 through August 4 and covers Men and Ideas in United States History 1000-1908, with 150 applicants vying for 30 spots.
