The IED Budget Committee examined the Dawes County Intermediate Education District budget amid questions about funding gaps. Superintendent Edward Riles and board members discussed operational costs, state grants, and the impact on services for feeder districts and local schools.

Oregon residents with unpaid or miscalculated taxes from 1966 will begin receiving notices demanding payment. The Internal Revenue Service warns that failure to settle could lead to federal tax liens and seizures of real and personal property. Prompt response to IRS letters and calls may avoid enforcement actions.
Sivetle Crest hosts the annual all district band concert tonight at 8 00 pm with bands from Sth 6th 8th 9 freshman high school and stage band under conductors Meetes Simons and Me Tot Ho ouster. Tom Houston and Lares Neugart perform a trumpet duet. High school band awards, including the freshman maid cup, progress award, service cap, senior certificate and the John Philip Sousa award, will be presented.
Marine Corporal George W Hayes son of Mr and Mrs George W Hayes participated in a three day sweep south of Da Nang as part of the Second Battalion First Marine Division. The mission reported 17 enemy killed and 32 suspects questioned. He was wounded and evacuated to a Saigon hospital. no further details available.
Kenneth Laird of Litcaum may exclusively use the prefix Bell evige in naming all registered Holstein dairy animals. The Holstein Friesian Association of America granted the use, becoming part of official breed records at their Brattleboro Vermont HQ. Over 46 000 prefixes are on file, with more than 2 500 reserved each year for breeders.
LTJG Norman A Dodge, a Myrtle Point native and Navy flight officer, received the Vietnam Service Medal with bronze star National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He earned his wings in 1966 joined VF-21 aboard Coral Sea and flew missions over North Vietnam.
Walter Hogan, Myrtle Point High School senior, won first in the Oregon state speaking contest in Eugene. He earns a $500 college scholarship, after already receiving a $100 district prize. alternates were Patricia Aldrich and Mike Baxter. Hogan will speak at the Realtor Northwest Convention.
Mrs Gene Mayberry was chosen head librarian at Flora M Laird Memorial Library replacing resigning Loyd Wells who will move to Medford. Mayberry, from Pendleton in February, is an Oregon native and mother of three. she starts July 1. Wells becomes assistant circulation librarian in Medford. Mrs Sam Dement elected to library board to fill Eldon Zinn vacancy.
Arthur Waters aged 35, longtime Myrtle Point resident and logger, died last Friday in North Bend after a logging accident on the Coos River the prior Wednesday May 17. A Korean War veteran and Eagles Lodge member, he is survived by his mother, sisters, and brothers. Services were held at Mills Funeral Home with internment at Ocean View Memorial Gardens.
William Clyde Reed 1924 May 23 died in Myrtle Point. World War II veteran and Columbus Ohio native. Survived by wife Loleta and three children. Service Friday May 26 at 2 00 p.m. officiated by Rev David Patterson at Myrtle Crest Memorial Garden. In state at Myrtle Point Funeral Home Thursday 9 00 a.m. to 8 00 p.m. and Friday 9 00 a.m. to 12 noon.
R. Davenport, a Myrtle Polm dairyman, won the 1966 Consecutive Breeder Award for his Jersey herd. It marks Davenport’s 15th breeder award, the most by any individual in the state, with about 12 nationally achieving similar totals.
The district schedules a second budget vote for May 29 after an initial defeat. The revised request totals 1,242,795.34 dollars, reduced by 28,602 dollars. polls open 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Myrtle Crest Dora Arago Bridge and Broadbent.
Effective at 12:01 a.m. Saturday May 27 the forest fire season starts in the Coos Forest Protective Association District. Open burning requires a permit and logging operators must have fire tools at landings though humidity rules wait for a later date. Permits available by contacting the Coos Protective Association offices.
Miller, a Myrtle Point history teacher, joins 30 educators from twelve states at Florida University for the National Defense Education Act program. The institute runs June 19 through August 4 and covers Men and Ideas in United States History 1000-1908, with 150 applicants vying for 30 spots.
Ten Coos County women were selected to serve on a 4 H Home Economics Advisory Committee. Mrs Everett Messerle Catching Inlet is chairman. Mrs Don Cunningham Powers is vice chair. secretary Mrs Paul Davis Gravelford area. Members include Mrs Vernon Sell Jr Bridge, Mrs Lynn Bowman Bandon, Mrs Fred Cushing Broadbent, Mrs Richard W Mitts Sunnyhill, Mrs Edward Schwartz North Bend, Mrs Jack Schneiderman Cons Bay, and Mrs Edward Parry Coquille. The group will analyze the 4 H home economics program and advise Extension agents on policy and training needs.
