Myrtle Point High School announces five seniors Evelyn Belandger Jerry Brodie Chuck Humble and John Meldrum chosen for the 1966 67 Who s Who Among American High School Students. Selection honors lead academics athletics and activities and only about 3 percent of graduates earn the distinction.
City budget committee approves the submitted budget at a May 19 meeting. The package remains within the 6 percent limitation and is deemed approved without changes.
The Southwestern Oregon Board of Realtors and Real Estate Divisions with the Department of Cooperation and Ton Ngoffit partner with Southwest Oregon Community College for a four day Real Estate Seminar Conference. Attendees expected to discuss budgeting lighting surveys and school crossing safety as council explores the impact of a new four lane highway.
Don Schmidt and Bob Powrie begin a Dole beans pilot project with 30 acres near Powers and Norway. Local labor will supply up to 300 workers for picking starting mid July, paid per pound with a seasonal bonus option. Jack Greenland named field foreman. no migrant workers hired.
The American Automobile Association notes fewer emergency breakdowns in 1966 despite a 4 percent rise in car registrations. AAA puts total breakdowns at 69,055,000, about one percent fewer than 1965.
Donna Gumpert of Prentice Hall will lead an elementary teachers music workshop at Maple Primary School on May 1 and 8. The program targets grades 1-3 from 3:00 to 4:00 pm and grades 4-6 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm with all teachers and interested persons invited to attend.
Joe Harry a former Myrtle Point resident died after a two car collision on Gravelford Road about 7 10 last Thursday night. A southbound 1965 Rambler driven by Harry collided head on with a northbound loaded log truck owned by Art Jones and driven by Walter A McKensie of North Bend. The truck swerved after hitting a dip causing the crash. Harry died en route to Myrtle Point Funeral Home. McKensie was not seriously injured.
City court records show Danny Kilgore fined five dollars for voice related offense and Danny Jones punished for double parking with fifteen dollars. Dennis Freer paid nineteen dollars for a TsU violation. A basic rule violation incurred ten dollars.
Twenty two students from SWOCC and local high schools receive scholarships chosen by the scholarship and loan committee. Two full tuition awards go to top performers from each district with further merit and need based awards to Myrtle Point and other district students including Ann Hathaway. Lt Marvin Radloff, a Myrtle Point graduate, earned Army Aviation training top 10 percent and heads to Vietnam June 16 after May 13 arrival with family.
Retired Colonel John Barney will address the congregation at the Christian Church on Sunday evening May 21 at 7 p.m. He left the U.S. Army in 1964 after twenty years as a military chaplain and has spoken widely about his experiences in the armed services.
Born February 9 1900 in Myrtle Point the veteran served in Korea and the past decade. Survived by wife Je Anne five children and numerous relatives with burial at De ra Cemetery officiated by Rev David Bol. Bearers listed include Jim Layton Tom Layton Glenn Perry Jim Pert Bea Miller Bob Pierce Maak Burr Cliff Frasier.
A school board decides to accept 96002 in insurance for a wrecked bus and uses 7800 deductible to cover remaining costs. The 18s model bus had 14 years of Devine service and will be replaced with a heavy metro bus to serve as a substitute. The district plans to enroll eligible students in a program for the next school year.
