The Dramatics Department of Mourtie Point High School presented The Case of the Sulky Girl Friday evening led by Alden Kit Kittredge. Betty Lou Meyer acted as the sulky heiress, with Nancy Meyer as the secretary, supported by a cast including Joan Worles Joan Woods Phyllis Shelton Wan da Hits Dick Briggs and others. The school band under Arnold Melby and a barber shop quartet energized the event, while behind the scenes workers helped make the production a success. The crowd was not large.
May 17 report shows Coos County Red Cross fund drive total at 25 475 dollars, still 7 745 below the county quota of 23 220. The Coos Bay chapter voted to send 1 210 to the National Red Cross to aid Midwest disaster relief as other areas like Charleston AC & W Squadron Hauser Air Force Base and Powers go over or near their quotas.
Three Myrtle Point men Harold Watzling Ervin Wilberger and Rev Wilmer A Briggs hauled immense Chinooks around 225 lbs during a Rogue River trip above Williams boat landing near Gold Beach. Coquille Valley Boy Scouts of America held a two day camporee at Norway Grove May 17 and 18 with 115 scouts and leaders from Broadbent Myrtle Point Coquille Arago Riverton and Bandon. Patrols competed in campcraft and scouting skills. awards and Court of Honor prizes were announced and a district playoff crowned Troop 14 Coquille champions.
The Myrtle Point Una Rebekah lodge 1 marks its 50th anniversary with a Saturday evening event at the IOOF hall. All Odd Fellows and friends are invited to join a program, refreshments, square dancing, and card games.
Fred Waterman released from military service and comes home to his wife. Mrs Waterman has been living with Waterman's mother, Mrs Clare McCuloch of Remote during his absence. The Powries in Portland Meadows for horse racing season attend a Coquille talent show featuring Kay Lyle Nox, seven year old granddaughter of Mr and Mrs A L Powrie of Coquille, performing a piano solo. Myrtle Point residents answered the Red Cross urgent appeal at the new school gym last Thursday afternoon. Lewis Knight chaired the local effort with many volunteers and the Business and Professional Women's Club sponsored the drive, reporting 364 registrations and a record turnout for Korea relief blood donations.
Eisenhower and Kefauver won Oregon’s presidential primaries securing full delegate support for Chicago’s national conventions. Eisenhower led Republicans with 180,473 votes, Kefauver topped Democrats with 127,907, while MacArthur trailed and Warren and Taft figures appeared in precinct returns.
Voters in Myrtle Point leaned toward Kefauver in the Democratic primary. Republican results in the city included National committeeman Jess Gard and other district officials. A ballot mixup occurred in Precincts 54 and 58 over Port District races while Precinct 55 at city hall listed Port of Bandon candidates Henry L. George Archie H. Rosa Jee J. Cary.
Coos county returns indicate Pickett leads in Friday's primary with strong showing for the District Attorney race. Republicans and Democrats filed for the attorney’s post as candidates prepare for the general election in November.
