The Martha Circle of the Methodist church hosts a home cooked dinner in the church basement today from 5 30 to 8 pm with all proceeds aiding Steven Goddard in his medical costs including skin grafts and blood transfusions in a Portland hospital. The event invites Mr and Mrs to attend and support the cause.
A power disruption occurred when a 2300 volt distribution fault cut juice to a region. Power crews worked to repair the line and energize a new substation, restoring service. A woman driver is noted in the chaotic scene, with locals joking about the event as repairs proceeded.
The commencement date has been moved to Wednesday May 27. Dr John Shuls of the System of Higher Education will deliver the address on the subject announced. Monte Lund is Valedictorian for the class of 1933 and Shirley Tobey is Salutatorian. Fees begin at 7 p.m.
Reverend Norbert G A Heins was installed as circuit rider for Southwest Oregon Missouri Synod Lutherans in an upstairs post office room service. He will base in Myrtle Point and hold Sunday worship at 11 00 with Sunday school at 9 45. teachers meeting on Friday May 15 at 7 30 at William Gurney home.
A former resident who attended Arago High School and was known in Southern Coos County drowned Friday in Pearl Harbor after falling from the Elk Horn, a gasoline tanker. Shipmate tried to rescue him but he sank. Funeral plans are pending in Coquille. He is James A. Scott Sr.’s son, with several brothers and sisters surviving across Tacoma, Phoenix, Sixes, Broadbent, and other towns.
Oregon Liquor Control Commission grants fourteen liquor by the drink licenses in Cool County. Of 265 total dispenser licenses, 195 go to public establishments and 70 to private clubs. Coos county recipients include O'Connor’s Supper Club Nosth Bend, Coquille Valley & Country Club, Tanglewood Lodge Rand on, Myrtle Hotel and Coffer Shop Myrtle Point, Elks Club Coos Bay, Fraternal Order of Eagles Coos Bay, and more.
Western Oregon loggers will join Oregon State Forestry Department and fire patrol groups from May 5 to 12 for discussions on 26 new forestry laws and fire protection methods. Meetings occur in Gold Beach Myrtle Point Coos Bay and Reedsport with a May 22 Medford event by the Tree Farm association. The film The Enemy is Fire will be shown to aid prevention efforts. Over 3,000 operators attended last year.
Harris Ellsworth cites wasteful spending in defense during wartime and postwar build up. He quotes a House Appropriations member on a Korean railroad charging the United States $1,000,000 daily for hauling army supplies. Continued on page three.
Four educators resign to leave at the end of the current year. Mrs Earl Neer and Miss Bet ty Wiley among the four, with Miss Grace Lemke and Mine Be Goddard Wyatt also listed as resigning. Some plan to pursue graduation at Oregon State. replacements expected within weeks.
Coos County Restubs sponsors a benefit for Lakeshore Crippled Children's camp. The Horace Heidi Show will play at Coos Bay high school auditorium Monday June date. Tickets on sale Friday at Semper Henry Drug store Myrtle Point Johnny's Music Coquille The Mule Coos Bay seating reserved with prices 180, 240, 300, 360. Standiey's Farm and Oklahoma humor highlighted. Proceeds benefit camp and are distributed locally.
Ed E. Sempert co owner of Sempert Henry Jug Co was unanimously chosen as president of the Myrtle Point Lions for the coming year at the regular dinner meeting in the Myrtle hotel. Officers elected include Frank Meldrum 1st vice president Hitchie Francis 2nd vice president Driscoll treasurer Chet Weed secretary Jack Vannice and Austin Dodge tail twisters Fuss Papineau Lion tamer and two year directors John Heeren and Ben Daniels Bill Downing will chair the trap shoot committee for the Community building project with Active club. Miss Edeltraut Gutsche guest speaker shared life in East Germany under Russian domination.

The Myrtle Point High School Seniors presented the annual class play Desperate Ambrose to a large audience Thursday evening. They donated 180 to a love fund for Steven Goddard hospitalized after a tire accident, with a card saying Get Well Stevie.
The Myrtle Point American Legion Auxiliary sponsors Poppy Day sales May 22 and 23 to honor veterans and support their families and child welfare. Poppy committee chair Mrs. Joe Schilling leads the effort with assistance from Mrs. Lloyd Jarvis. volunteers decorate the Herald window to promote the sale.
Coquille Valley Golf & Country Club hosts the second week of the Spring Handicap. Four flights schedule matches to be completed by next Sunday night with scores due at the clubhouse. Players and handicaps listed for each upcoming match across Championship, Second, Third, and Fourth Flights.
Congressman Harris Ellsworth announced competitive examinations for appointments to the U S Military Academy at West Point and the U S Naval Academy at Annapolis. Examinations will be conducted by the U S Senate commission on a date set for July in Grants Pass, Roseburg, and Medford areas. Eligible candidates must be unmarried and residents of Oregon's Fourth Congressional District.
