Planning Commission approves lighting and zoning talk in city meeting
The Planning Commission discussed lighting control ordinances dealing with fowl and livestock inside city limits and asked City Manager Ben Nichols to consult the Coos County sanitation Dept. They considered mobile homes outside a trailer park but took no action. They voted to request 33 more street lights on the highway and four on Ash Street near the hospital. Pre registration for first graders is set for May 12 at Maple Primary from 1 00 to 4 00 pm and at Bridge Broadbent Dora and Arago schools. Eligible children must be six by November 15 1967 and birth certificates should be brought.

Elk River Hatchery Bill Cleared by Oregon House

Last Pioneer Volkmar Family Member Dies at 92
Henry George Volkmar, longtime Myrtle Point resident and last surviving member of the Volkmar pioneer family, died May 7 after a long illness at Mast Hospital. Services were held May 10 at Myrtle Point Funeral Home with burial following cremation in Coos Bay. He lived on the family claim near Myrtle Point and owned the local hardware business until 1945. He served in the Oregon National Guard and the Myrtle Point Fire Department and helped rear seven nieces and nephews after his sister’s death. He was a member of the Coos Curry Pioneer Historical Association and enjoyed pioneer history and local nature pursuits along the Coquille River.

Mrs. L W Lund of Gaylord wins season tickets for all gate entries after submitting Keeping pace with time and space as the 1967 fair theme The contest ran for a month ending May 1 and was judged at the May 2 Coos County Fair Board meeting in North Bend The fair runs August 16 to 20 with parade and booth decorations judged for color potential.

Local Woman Named University Business School Queen
Anne Guerin a sophomore at the University of Oregon was selected Queen of the university’s School of Business last week. She represented Alpha Phi and was among sixteen sorority finalists feted at the Thunderbird motel in Eugene. Guerin will reign for one year and hopes to teach after graduation.
