Logging To Stop When Humidity Reaches Thirty
In western Oregon May 15 marks the first day of the closed season for woods operations under the operators permit law with exceptions in Douglas county and Josephine and Jackson counties. Operations must halt when humidity hits 30 percent and during high winds at 35 percent. State Forester N S Rogers says logging has doubled since 1832 and emphasizes defense needs while avoiding multi day closures. Nationwide drive to boost egg production announced
A national effort in Washington aims to maximize egg output this spring while limiting staple exports like wheat and tobacco. Oregon State College poultry specialists advised keeping flocks at current housing and using ample feed. The program, backed by Secretary Wickard, covers eggs, dairy, pork, and chickens for two years to meet rising demand as industrial payrolls grow. The government via the Surplus Marketing Administration will support markets to maintain profitable prices, with targets such as eggs at 22 cents and pork at $8 per hundredweight.
