Dal King Named Circuit Judge in Second District

Attorney Del M. King of Myrtle Point was appointed by Governor Sprague to be circuit judge of the second judicial district to succeed James T. Brand. King, a former state legislator and Myrtle Point city attorney, will take the oath after Brand retires, with the court term starting June 2 and the Belknap case set for May 3.

Funeral Services Held Here For Jay Schriefer

Jay Robert Schriefer born February 8 1913 in Chrisney Indiana died after a heart attack at WicAuley hospital Marshfield. Funeral services were conducted at the Joca Methodist church with Rev. T J Pryor, burial in Norway cemetery. He lived in Myrtle Point Oregon, worked at a local bakery, and was a 1930 Myrtle Point Union High School graduate. Survived by father A A Schriefer, brother KE Gehriefer, sister Mrs Olga Laird, two nieces and an aunt, with other relatives in the east. Mother and a sister preceded him in death and a brother was killed earlier.

County Road Crews Gain Raises in New Wage Scale

County road department workers receive pay increases under a new wage scale posted after final adjustments. Roadmaster Floyd J Robb adds 10 dollars monthly to 723 dollars, while district foremen stay at 140, chief clerk 135, assistant clerk 100, and shop foreman 169. Most hourly workers see increases from 52 to 87 cents, with various trades and roles targeted for higher rates.

Wildflowers along Oregon Coast Highway bloom in May

A Oregon Coast Highway association report highlights thirteen wildflower varieties blooming along U. S. 101 from Marshfield to beyond, including Salal Thimbleberry pond lilies Foxglove Scotch Broom and Violet. Blooms extend through June in many areas with Azalea Rhododendron Iris and Indian paint brush adding color from Brookings to Florence and Lincoln County.

Richfield Station Reopens in Myrtle Point

The Richfield Station at 8th and Spruce in Myrtle Point reopened Tuesday with Roy Michaels as proprietor. He partners with Wm Leith. they previously operated a Richfield station at Gold Beach. Michaels will manage the local station. it was built recently by Kay Cutler and leased to Richfield. The facility is modern with up to date equipment.

La Grande Chooses Miss Joanne Leslie for Jorel Junior High

Miss Joanne Leslie of La Grande will teach at Jorel Junior High next year with 6th grade as her main responsibility and will oversee music for 6th 7th and 8th grades. A graduate of Eastern Oregon College of Education she taught at Stenfield and last year in Umatilla. Principal Floyd E Summers calls her highly recommended.

4 H Scholarships Awarded in Coos County

The first 4 H club scholarships for the Corvallis summer session June 9 to 21 go to Joyce Ott Allegany and Gerald Lille Arago, announced by Pomona Orange. The executive committee met at Sumner last Sunday to choose winners and further nominations pour in from granges and local businesses. Officials predict a substantial rise in attendance, with about 90 youths expected.

Six Women Enter Coos County Rodeo Queen Race

Six young women compete for the Coos County Rodeo Queen title with more entrants likely. Candidates include June Meal Myrtle Point Ila Barkdoll Broadbent Alice King Powers and Maxine Rackleff Arago. The winner receives an outfit and a trip to the roundup while runners up receive cowgirl hats. The rodeo runs July 4 5 and 6 at the Myrtle Point fairgrounds.

Joe L. Knight Sr. Pioneer Stockman Dies Suddenly

Joe L. Knight Sr., 73, a longtime rancher near Myrtle Point, died Monday after a heart attack. He and wife celebrated their 53rd anniversary two months earlier. He was active with cattle and horses, served as a director of Security Bank of Myrtle Point, helped organize the Coos and Curry County Fair, and was a charter member of Marshfield's Yogies Lodge. He leaves a widow, seven children, seventeen grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
