Western Oregon loggers and mill operators will join the state forestry department and private protection groups for three May meetings in Coos County to discuss fire prevention and safer forest practices. Panels of loggers and sawmill men will lead topics from watchmen service to slash disposal and power laws, stressing cooperation to reduce fires. Last year loggers reported 49 fires. about 3,000 attendees helped achieve the strong fire record. Meetings set for Reedsport, Coquille, and Gold Beach with dates May 10 11 12 and follow ups in Mecford at 7 30 pm.
Many golfers must complete first round 18 hole matches by Sunday night to qualify for the Spring Tournament second round. Only four contests turned in so far with results: Binglegaeu over Holmen, Downing over Kind, Chatburn over Noyes, Barthelmew over Broox. Disqualification follows if deadlines miss.
McKinley Grange invites public to a smorgasbord on Sunday May 16 to raise funds for a new hall. Dinner served 1 to 7 pm with adults 1.50, students 75 cents, and children 50 cents. Proceeds support the Grange home project.
Oregon State College Cooperative Extension issued a report noting Rodney Davenport of Myrtle Point led Oregon in butterfat production for 1953 with 607.1 pounds per cow from 15.2 registered and grade Jerseys. Second and third went to Ben Monson of Hauser and Frank Schutzwohl of Grants Pass.
Thirteen Myrtle Point students joined the Honor Band at Coos Bay’s annual music festival on Friday and Saturday May 7 and 8. The group impressed with new junior high uniforms and improved performance, joining 13 schools in a parade and massed band before individual selections by each school.
The Myrtle Point and Marshfield FFA chapters sponsor an implement field day at George Jenkins ranch near Coquille on Fairview road May 14 starting at 10:00 AM. Demonstrations cover about seven acres morning, followed by a tractor driving contest in the afternoon. Bring lunch. event runs to about 2:30 PM. Dealers may arrange tractor transport by contacting the FFA.
Oregon State Cattlemen's Association plans its 41st annual convention in Baker from May 16 to 19. The program includes Hell's Canyon air tours aboard two West Coast Empire DC-3 liners and a banquet at the Baker Civic Center featuring the Swiss Family Fraunfelder. The Hell's Canyon excursion costs six dollars per person and is organized by Hells Canyon Tours, Inc.

Southern Coos county residents are urged to visit this week to see an exhibit sponsored by industrial arts classes. The display at the Brodie Shingle Company showcases projects and crafts by local students and instructors highlighting regional talent.
The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ L D announces a series of special meetings from May 16 to 30 led by Donald D Landon of Springfield district president Southern Oregon. Special sermons and daily prayer and Bible study will be held at various homes with cottage meetings at 7 45 p m. Landon will be joined by Jack Verhei for the first Sunday May 16 service at 8 45 a m, inviting the public to attend.
Newell Waters of Myrtle Point was seriously injured in a stabbing after a dance at the Coquille Valley Country Club. Roy McAllister, also of Myrtle Point, was arrested on charges of attack with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and held on $5,000 bail. Waters underwent about three hours of surgery and remained in critical condition. a preliminary hearing is planned before Justice Jess Barton in Coquille.
Mrs George A Loud a former Myrtle Point resident died in her 90th year on April 22 1954 in Cambridge Massachusetts. Her husband a logging operator died in a Millington car accident returning from a Marshfield football game. He was a former Michigan congressman and the only civilian aboard the American fleet at Manila Bay serving with Dewey.
Local police answered a call for help Saturday night and placed Charles David Van Vlack under arrest for alleged wife beating. He was arraigned before Justice Jess Barton in Coquille Monday, where justice revoked a former parole sentence for larceny and ordered him to serve the former sentence of one year in the county jail.

Directed by Miss Aso Morton the production includes a matinee at 1:30 pm Saturday with 75 cents adults 50 cents students 25 cents children.
Union High School District No 2 voters will decide May 20 whether to exceed the 6 percent budget limit. The $53,738.52 outside the limit funds operation, down from last year, with a proposed millage around 16.6 mills based on the present $6.881 million assessed value.
The Myrtle Point Sportsmen's club sponsors a big movie night this Friday at 8 p m in the new Junior High gym. Films include The River Beyond Wings For the Angler and Boat Races in Florida. Proceeds aid the new club house on the trap grounds with one evening only.
