Project Prometheus Names Seven For Ashland Cultural Project

Seven Myrtle Point high school students win summer study grants from Project Prometheus at Ashland. Winners are Evelyn Belanger Allyn Hubbell Charles Humble Dan Krewson Don Mast Jim McCrae and Mickey Roper. Alternates are Everette Webber John Nelson Carol Gaseman and Carol Brister. Program funds six weeks of lectures Shakespeare plays and art exhibits under director Robert L. Casbeer.

Bobcats Clinch 18 8 Victory Over Pacific Pirates

Myrtle Point high school baseball team defeated the Pacific Pirates 18 to 8 last Friday for their fourth win in 17 games. Wayne Carpenter threw a seven hitter and belted a three run homer in the fourth. Jerry Brodie went 3 for 5 in the 18 hit barrage while Tom Krewson scored four runs and Terry Sisman added a triple.

Viet Nam Veteran Returns to Medical School in Texas

Captain Calvin Chapman, a Viet Nam veteran, is reassigned to Brooks School of Aerospace Medicine in San Antonio Texas to teach officers for duty in Southeast Asia. He will travel to Chicago in late June to present a paper on humanitarian aspects of Air Force medical service in Viet Nam before the American Medical Association. He plans to report for duty in Texas by July 1 with his family leaving Westover Air Force Base Massachusetts. Cool-Country Pioneer and Historical Association meets May 14 at North Bend museum with a fashion parade of turn of the century styles led by Mrs Charles Mahaffy and comments by Mrs Francis Flanagan.

Broadbent Bridge Funds Approved For Replacement

County funds will cover 30 percent of an estimated 100000 dollar project with 68 percent from federal sources. Construction is planned to begin in spring 1807 and the bridge will replace the old one lane steel frame Southside Bridge.

Myrtle Crest Track Team Sets Pace In Reedsport Meet

Myrtle Crest defeated Reedsport 142% to 68% on their field with 20 first places to 5. Terry Odie led with a 41.0 in class II 230, tied hurdles in class XII at 10.4. Paul Arment cleared 8'11" in pole vault, George Horner set 600 yard mark 1:51.6 and 330 yard 40.2, with several school records broken or tied. Subdistrict meet set for Friday at 3:30 p.m. at local field. county meet May 21 at 10 a.m. in Reedsport.

Scouts Camp At Fairview Open District Camporee Prep

Members of Boy Scout Troop 145 spent last weekend camping near Fairview to open a campsite at the Coquille Valley District Camporee grounds and to practice for the District Camporee set for June 3 5. They served a broiled chicken dinner to the boys fathers and held a troop campfire with songs and skits before Sunday’s practice of competitive events testing Scouting skills such as seamanship and first aid.

Alexa Chittick choir director presented three vocal music awards at the annual spring concert on April 21. Nora Haddock student director received the Arion Award for outstanding senior vocal student. Beryl Winningham earned the vocal department award and Judy Van Vlack received the musical life award.

Hirsh School Choir Sings at Myrtle Point High

The 1906 spring concert on April 21 featured the Hirsh School Choir performing spirituals folk tunes Latin hymns and classical pieces. The Folksingers added gaiety with A Crooked Litt Mae and Gonna Build A Mountain while Karl Howell highlighted My Love Is Like a Red Red Reed.

Gilda Bosco Crowned Queen at Junior Prom

Gilda Bosco, junior, was crowned queen of the Junior Prom at Myrtle Creek gym last Saturday. Joe Buchanan placed a silver tiara on her head as classmates Marnie Agerter Ann Hathaway Sheryl Huntley and Phyllis Pillette joined in the celebration amid spring décor and candled tables. Prem committees included Sheryl Huntley Sandy Frasier Sue Huntley and Su Lockhart with Mike Agerter and Mrs Evelyn Huntley assisting. chaperones and students arranged the event with an airground setting.
