Mayor urges citizens to wear Buddy Poppy pins to honor fallen and disabled veterans and support the fundraising campaign. Proceeds benefit disabled veterans as part of a national effort to memorialize the dead by aiding the living.
The first annual 20 mile walk from Myrtle Point to Coquille drew 227 participants and is expected to net about five thousand to six thousand dollars. John Hewlett finished first after the weather delay. About 200 walkers came from Coquille and 27 from Myrtle Point.
The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce launches an accelerated search for a Southwestern Oregon Myrtlewood to enter the American Forestry Association Social Register of Big Trees. A $950 prize awaits the largest Myrtlewood entry. measurements must be mailed or delivered to the chamber, with Elton Schroider as contest chairman. Measurements include trunk circumference at 4.5 feet, total height, and crown spread average.
Local ranchers and timber companies in Coos County join forces with the county and Lynn Cannon to fund and distribute tansy flea beetles. The beetle, released near Fort Bragg after USDA import from Europe, targets tansy ragwort to reduce its spread, complementing the cinnabar moth released since 1964.
Clifford Hult and Sue Geaney were elected to District 41 school board seats in the recent annual district election. Hult defeated opponent Halt Semning for Zone 2 with 314 votes, while Geaney won Zone area with a 251 to 138 edge over Donald Peas. Voting for local school committee members continued.
