Wartime readers are urged to honor mothers who support troops at home and abroad. May 10 is set for Mother’s Day with calls to give gifts letters and homemade treats to boost morale and express appreciation for steadfast devotion.
Jima Porter of Point senior broke county records in the javelin with 161 feet 11 inches and won the pole vault at 10 feet. Harry Brown led in high hurdles before a disqualification in low hurdles. Ellis of Myrtle Point placed in the mile and 440. Multiple event results list Marshfield and Myrtle Point athletes dominating sprints and field events with Porter and Bingham among top finishers.
Five Myrtle Point Protestant churches join at the Presbyterian church Sunday night for National Music Week observance. Church of Christ Rev. Jess Johnson will speak on The Touch of the Master's Hand as congregations from Church of Christ Brethren Assembly of God Methodist and Presbyterian provide two numbers each. Service begins at 8:60.
Lawrence Mullen, new head of Civilian Defense air raid watches, seeks volunteers to man the local station. He replaces Ralph Whitaker who resigned after leading since the program began. Temporary Aide C Barker supervises daytime shifts. Mullen runs nights. About 112 volunteers currently sign in for three hour shifts, with teachers leaving after school terms reducing numbers. Citizens urged to join to maintain 24 hour coverage. schedules can fit work or home duties.
County high school students will receive TB skin tests next Tuesday and Wednesday conducted by Dr. Erickson, assistant state health officer, with county nurse Mrs. Ethel Littler. Testing occurs at Myrtle Point Union High School on Wednesday at 9:00 for local and Arago and Powers students, with testing also available for pre school children and adults in Coquille and Bandon later that day.
The Girls' Club under Miss Maddox and Misa eda ka gayhes recently purchased an $18.0 defense bond. Local organizers indicated the funds will support wartime efforts and community morale.
Plans for a Myrtle Point service club for armed forces personnel include a reading room card tables radio piano and facilities. A women’s organization committee and the Chamber of Commerce handle the project with possible locations under study and fundraising to furnish rooms and equipment. Members named include Mrs Claire Lehmandyky chair and Elton Schroeder Austin Dodge Perry Roper on respective committees.
Final arrangements set for an amnesty drive from May 16 to June 15 led by Bud riffin of the Lions club with Ralph Whitaker and Harold Stemmier. Chamber of Commerce helps sponsor four prizes for top home improvements and five dollar defense stamps awarded to winners in two classes, parade to kick off at 2:00 p.m. with the high school band and local participants.
Marlin Evans was appointed chief of the Myrtle Point fire department by the city council after serving as acting chief during Hughes illness. The council aims to recruit at least 14 firefighters to boost protection this summer, with only about seven active now. A budget committee was formed to meet May 18 to set annual city administration quotas, including P. W. Laird Elton Schroeder R. O. Bowers Wakdemar Gurney Walter Kreuger and W. E. Lundy as members with N. G. W. Perkins and D. N. McMair as alternates.

The Lions Club gathered at the Jack and Jill Cafe to honor mothers, with about 14 or 15 attending as guests. Rev. George Tierney spoke on the home’s role during the war emergency, followed by a brief response from Mrs. W. E. Lundy. Music featured a high school quintet and instrumental numbers by Mrs. Glenn Neideigh.
Twenty Myrtle Point high school students visited the beach in Bandon on Wednesday to study biology. Mrs Ruth Jaynes accompanied the group as the biology guide and chaperone.
Fifty-two relatives gathered at Forrest and Mrs. Hermann’s Broadbent residence for a Hermann family reunion with a farm-home potluck. Honored guests included Russell Hermann and De Shearer of Klamath Falls, Myrtle Barnes of Portland, plus multiple Hermann relatives from Broadbent and nearby areas.
About 475 FFA members and delegates gathered for a Friday event as officials from Jack Ella and Maton, including Arthur Brotton, Dwain Elton Mayse, Oscar Crook, Warren Rema, and Ted Kirsch, along with Leith Bughes, accompanied the group on the trip.
