Myrtle Point High School honors rolls announced by principal

The Myrtle Point High School honor roll lists students across seniors juniors sophomores and freshmen for the third nine weeks. Names and GPAs include top scorers such as Jake Crook 4.0 Diana Cook 3.83 Linda Haug 4.0 Yvonne Waterman 3.96 and Jill Coffman 3.83 with honorable mentions to numerous other students.

First Grade Registration Set Friday at Schools

First graders entering Maple Primary School next fall must register Friday after a Mother's Day program. Registrations are planned at Dora Elementary Arago Elementary and Bridge Elementary with hours to be confirmed. Children must be six by November 15 1971 and bring a birth certificate or date of birth proof.

Pioneers Honored at Myrtle Point Pomeer Day Ceremony

Over 50 pioneer citizens were honored by the Myrtle Point Women’s Club at Pomeer Day Securities held Friday at the Presbyterian Church. Mayor Ervin Wilberger welcomed guests as Carl Beckham shared old-time pictures. Hattie Hatcher, 99, won oldest woman honors while 104-year-old Ritchie Houghton was the oldest man present. Three couples from Coquille Coos Bay and Arago were celebrated for long marriages of 63, 63, and 62 years respectively.

Gulstrom Receives JCI Senatorship Award in Medford

Gulstrom of Myrtle Point Jaycees earned the JCI Senatorship Award at the Oregon Jaycees state convention in Medford last weekend. Byron Olsen of Bay Area Jaycees presented the honor. Gulstrom has held several leadership roles and has ten years of Jaycees membership, the Myrtle Point club’s first to win the award.

Voters reject Myrtle Point school levy for second time

Myrtle Point School District 41 voters again defeat a tax levy exceeding limits by 694 301 dollars. The five polling sites show 407 to 331 in favor of rejection. Harold Robison wins re election to the district board over Gale Rood, while Ernie Allen defeats Donald Laird for Zone 1 and James A. Johnson runs unopposed for Dora Sitkum Zone 3.

Billie Pinkerton Named New Coquille Bank Operations Officer

Billie Pinkerton becomes operations officer at Security Bank of Coos County Coquille office opened March 1 at Sh and North Central Coquille. She previously served as teller and assistant operations officer at Myrtle Point office since 1968 and holds leadership roles in VFW Auxiliary and Royal Neighbors of America. She and husband Dave have four grown sons and have lived in the Coquille Valley area 26 years.

Community Action Center Plans Volunteer Drives and Quilts

The Community Action Center held its April meeting to organize barrel pickups for food donations and canned goods. Volunteers will collect items daily while clothing is sorted and quilts prepared from old materials for campers and those in need. A sewing group is urged to join weekly work parties. The center aims to visit elderly and lonely residents. The next meeting is May 11 at 509 1/2 St Myrtle Point at 10 a.m.

Telecasters seek funds for Broadbent TV translator

The Broadbent Television Translator Inc received FCC authorization on April 27 to build a VHF system linking the three networks. Construction will start soon with 1,000 needed in donations to Broadbent area residents. The Transistor Board asks 9 88 per family initially, then about 9 per year for maintenance.

Cattlemen Reward for Rustling Arrests Highlighted

Cattlemen paid 300 dollars for information that led to the arrest and conviction of three men for cattle rustling. Bob Swanbern of Brookings received a 900 dollar reward, with Fred Groes of the Oregon Cattlemen's Association presenting a 190 dollar check to Speakerg. The Curry District noted the ongoing reward program as a serious threat to livestock interests.

May 10 31 Clean-up Period Proclaimed in Myrtle Point

Mayor Ervin Wilberger proclaims May 10 to 31 as the citywide cleanup period in Myrtle Point. City crews will collect refuse left on streets. The Myrtle Point Chamber Retail Trade Committee plans a residential cleanup contest and letters will be sent to state commissions and the BLM about a park site near the Remote area.

Bank Debits Show Gain Across Oregon Banks in 1971

March 1971 bank debits from 10 reporting banks including Coos County rose versus February 1971 and March 1970. Debts for March 1971 totaled 960.584 million with Oregon's 366 banks reporting an 183 percent rise from February and 13 percent from March 1970. Overall March 1971 bank debts reached 8.37188 billion, up from February 34.542668 million and March 1970 4.6824 billion.
