Balloting set Monday on school district tax levy

Voters will decide on the school district tax levy and on school board and attendance area committee candidates. The levy asks for 081,733 total, down from 062,415, with an estimated tax rate of 13.98 per thousand versus 15.10 last year. Contests include incumbent Harold Robinson facing Gale D. Rood for a five year term, with other races involving Ernie Alien and Donald Laird.

Mingus Named Public Relations Head for Georgia Pacific Coos Bay

John Mingus appointed manager of public relations and advertising for the Coos Bay Division of Georgia Pacific. He replaces retiring William Rehmann and will be based in Cave Bay. Mingus, born May 13, 1933 in Polson Montana, comes from Oregon and Northern California where he ran property management and nursing home administration. He holds a Seattle University education degree earned in 1968 and has six siblings together with his wife Natalie and six children. The move follows Rehmann’s 30 years of service ending May 1, 1971.

Registration for first graders across Maple Primary Dora Arago Bridge and Broadbent starts with Septem ber 1971 enrollment at Bridge. Birth certificates required. Dement to Serve Rotary District 511 Leader

Wallace B Dement of Myrtle Point Rotary Club was elected district governor for Rotary District 511 at the Eugene conference. He will take office July 1 1978 succeeding Ray McNair. Dement, Coos County native and cattle rancher, is a former Myrtle Point city attorney and longtime attorney for Security Bank and board member.

Valedictorian and salutatorian named at Myrtle Point High

Sheila Sullivan and David Knife head the Myrtle Point High School 1971 graduating class as valedictorian and salutatorian. Sheila is active in clubs and aims to study sociology or psychology at Eastern Oregon College with a juvenile counselor goal. David is a varsity letterman in multiple sports and held student leadership roles, including National Honor Society officer position.

SWOCC Board to Meet Tonight in Myrtle Point Library

Southwestern Oregon Community College board of education plans an outreach meeting at Myrtle Point High School Library. Citizens and groups are invited to join the discussion as the board tours district communities. Stuller says meetings in other communities will follow in coming months. The Myrtle Point session starts at 7 p.m.

Security Bank to open Coquille branch with two week open house

Coquille hosts the Security Bank of Coos County new office at Shani North Central for a two week open house through May 15. Mayor Bob Mason will preside at a ribbon cutting at 10 AM on Saturday May 1 with Oregon Secretary of State Clay Myers among guests. A grand drawing for a Disney trip and color televisions will occur May 15. The 3,000 square foot, 800000 dollar building in Coquille includes a drive up window and offers new savings rates and Golden Age Checking.

Zoning and Tax Panel Draws Local Residents

About 100 people attended a Myrtle Grange panel on zoning and taxes on Sunday April 25. Henry Reppeto outlined six planning steps including an interim plan, district divisions and eventual zoning ordinances. The discussion covered senior tax exemptions, deferment, and Oregon's high farm property taxes as officials flagged a possible seventh Planning Commission member.
