District 4 school board cut 13176 from the failed 1971-72 budget after midnight vote. Reductions touched English and Science, transport funds for a bus, grounds upkeep, and maintenance. Levy outside six percent cap set at 679707 with 846 per thousand assessment.
Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce and local Rotary Club plan a noon luncheon at Colony Restaurant for a visiting Norwegian delegation of young business and professional leaders. The group begins Rotary Group Study Exchange tours April 14 and travels through Rotary District 511 until June 8. After lunch, Rotary district governor nominee Wallace Deem will guide a Christman tree farm tour. Delegation includes Reidar G Brunsgeard, Nils Johan Aulie, Knut Funderud, Halvor Noer, Leif M Udjus, Peer Otto Svenkerud, and Knut Henry.
Sixth graders from all Coos County districts joined a Beaver Hill forest tour on April 28 29 and 30 with 1149 students and 52 teachers. The event, funded by the Coos County extension office and coordinated with the Intermediate Education group, included briefings by Curry Farm Forester Ted El Hageen and George McGeorge, along with Paul Heikkila and Lyle Brown from the extension office.
James A. Peart of Myrtle Point earned a 4.0 GPA for the winter term at Southwestern Oregon Community College. Also on the honor roll are James R. Smith of Norwey, Kayleen Stevens of Powers, and Ronald Van Vinck and the list includes four Myrtle Point area students.
Ruth Eheel, Gaily Munthy and Debra Van Lingham are listed on the Southwestern Oregon Community College Dean's List. To qualify students must carry fewer than 18 credit hours, have no incompletes, and hold a GPA between 2.6 and 3.8.
Ross Pinkley, longtime Coquille Valley resident and former Myrtle Point mayor, directs the newly opened Security Bank of Coos County office at Sun and North Central Coquille. The two week opening began May 1 with an open house through May 18 offering refreshments and free premiums for new customers.
The Myrtle Point area dispute centers on a county road at the city east limits. City Attorney Frank Mel Gruen says only city crews have maintained it for 16 years, and current finances prevent further work. Pinkley, a longtime resident, and his family are mentioned in connection with a May 15 drawing for Disneyland and TVs.
Commerce this week urged residents to enter the residential cleanup contest tied to the annual City wide Cleanup Campaign. The chamber offers 960 and 85 savings bonds as prizes for first and second place. Entries may be left at the Herald Office and a chamber representative will photograph progress and completion.
Ervin Wilberger, mayor, proclaims a community emphasis on the annual Buddy Poppies drive by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The proceeds aid disabled and needy veterans, widows, and orphans, with a call for citizens to wear and purchase these symbols of gratitude for the sacrifices of service members.
Postmaster Mixon Schroeder at Myrtle Point announces postage increases effective Sunday May 16. First class letters rise to eight cents, air mail eleven, postage cards six, air mail cards nine, with third class up two cents to eight. Book rate 14 cents for the first pound and seven cents for each additional, library rate six cents plus two cents per extra pound.
A Pioneer National Title Insurance report shows 131 mortgages valued at nearly 7 million recorded in Coos County in April. The Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs led lenders with 22 mortgages totaling 422 761.23, followed by Western Bank with 27 loans totaling 91 036.32.
Local scouts from Myrtle Point Boy Scout Troop 145 earned top honors at the annual Scout Camperes held last weekend at China Flats. Four members Tommy Phillips John Syron David Tains and Ken Shaukis were nominated for the Order of the Arrow. New scoutmaster Bill Roush accompanied the troop on the outing.
