Wallace, Ellis and Sam Dement of Coos county visited California for the Western Livestock Journal 1980 California Beef Cattle Tour. The 13 day trip covered over 2100 miles with an average daily attendance of about 300 livestock men and a caravan of 100 automobiles. Monday evening Tom Forrest and Clarence Strong led a group of sportsmen to two small lakes near Myrtle Point to rescue about 20,000 Steelheads Silver Sides and Chinooks in overflow ponds after heavy rain. Local anglers saved the fish from drowning and released them back into nearby streams.
