Lieut Keith Murie, in the quartermaster department, escaped the Ho tel Oriental fire in Kobe by climbing from the roof in his shorts and suffered only minor burns and a severe cut. Three officer friends died in the blaze. Murie expected furlough home in December.
Sportsmen and all conservation supporters are invited to a Friday banquet and meeting at the Grange hall with Ed Stanton substituting for ill speaker Mr Jewett. Banquet at 7 30, tickets priced 1 50, program open to all residents and club members.
Cranberry growers in southwest Oregon will hear about fungus diseases at a Bandon meeting on Thursday May 4 at 6 00 pm in the Masonic hall. Adin Steenland the extension service plant pathologist will speak about diseases and control methods for Oregon fruit crops. Growers seek understanding of disease and efficient use of control dollars.
Mr. Warren Young grand master of the I O O F of Oxegen visits Myrtle Point tonight to address the local lodge. All Odd Fellows are urged to attend at 8 and the Rebekahs will be present as guests. Refreshments to follow.
The Senior High School gym hosts the three act comedy Girl Shy on May 12 directed by Mr Burrows. Cast includes Dick Anderson as Tom Meyer Fordyce Worsham as Oke Stimson Marlene Train as Caroline John Haese as William Meyer Laura Shelton as Sylvia Webster etc admission prices 75c adults 38c seniors 25c juniors.
Mrs Julia Beeson, registrar for the Myrtle Point section, reports about 190 people registered to vote for the primary. Some voters had to re register due to precinct changes in the newly acquired area. The registration office will remain open until 30 days before the general election in November for those who wish to vote.

Earl Breuer manager of Superior Cheese in Myrtle Point was elected president of the Rotary club at a board meeting after the dinner last Thursday. E F Hall was named vice president and Bert Pearson secretary. Breuer, E L Clausen and Gordon MacKerrow were elected to the board of directors with holdovers. John Cari Tex Billingsley Wilmer A Briggs and E F Hall named to the board as well.
The Rural School Board asks voters in Rural district to approve exceeding the 6 percent levy limit to raise 489 881 32 with elections in each district Monday May 15 at 8 00 pm PST. Last year excess 536 938 30. total levy this year 777 468. 49 50 was 848 052. District changes after Union High No 2 Myrtle Point became first class, division needed for elementary and high school taxes. Zones A and E vote day in June for Rural School Directors. Franklin R. Zeran dean of Oregon State College School of Education spoke to Union High School teachers and school board members at a dinner meeting last Thursday. He assisted in planning a 1950 51 guidance program and outlined counseling services he formerly oversaw for the US Office of Education covering 48 states.
Senator William Walsh will address the B P W Club and guests on the Columbia Valley Authority at a seven o clock dinner tonight in the Myrtle Hotel banquet room. Mrs J M presides. reservations cost 128 and all are welcome to attend the talk or the full dinner.
Myrtle Point students excel at the North Bend event led by Arnold Melby. Senior group earns top and high ratings across brass and vocal categories while Junior Division performers also receive multiple first and second ratings. Myrtle Point school sections, including the grade school band, stand out as the conference’s sole elementary ensemble.
Myrtle Point leads the southern division with Gold Beach Bandon and Powers among eight teams. George Linn and Carl Gilbert coach Myrtle Point with practice at the fair grounds each evening. Eligible players born since January 1 invited to show for practice. northern division details noted.
Coos County 4-H Leaders meet at Greenacres Grange to review plans for a new 40 by 90 foot exhibit hall and dormitory at the county fair grounds. Orvus Miller presented preliminary designs including sleeping facilities a kitchen a demonstration stage and dining area.
Four baby boys arrived at the Mast hospital to swell Coos county birth totals yet none claimed Myrtle Point as home town. A girl, daughter of Mr and Mrs Frederick C Belcher, made her debut Saturday April 22. Parents of the boys listed are Orland L Merch en Powers, Richard A Walker Coquille, Glen Kerber Langlois and Victor L Howard Bandon with respective arrival dates in 1950.
Darrell Brodie is elected president of the Parent Teachers association. The dads take charge at the next regular meeting with E. C. Anstey as chairman presiding. The meeting moves to Monday evening May first due to the teachers meeting in Coos Bay. Installation of officers to be performed at the Monday meeting with Mrs E. C. Ansley acting as installing officer.
Davenport Jersey herd near Myrtle Point, Oregon, completed a year of Herd Registry testing under Oregon State College and American Jersey Cattle Club verification. The group averaged 6115 pounds of milk and 434 pounds of butterfat per cow with about 11 cows tested.
Dr S R Smith district superintendent of the Methodist church pace will attend the 4th quarterly conference at the local Methodist church Friday at 7 30. Rev Wilmer A Briggs, pastor, urges members and friends to attend. Mr and Mrs Jack Breuer and son David visited Sunday at the Paul Breuer home.
