Tough enough to be gentle describes Oklahoma Gas and Electric Husky workers in a rugged road gang. The roughneck men, veterans of the road, are tall and sturdy and endure ice storms. A boss loads three into a truck for a trip to a Fort Smith health center, arriving by the alleys.

The Oregon Coast Sportsmen's Council met Myrtle Point Club for a Sunday dinner banquet with 15 members attending. President Fo Jo McBeth led a lengthy business session at Ten Mile Lake focusing on game and wildlife issues and Senate Bill No 103 affecting boating speeds on Diamond Lake.
The Rev Meredith Groves Methodist district superintendent of Eugene will visit Myrtle Point early next week to assist in the annual visitation evangelism program. He will speak at the Methodist Men's meeting Tuesday night March 19 and attend the building committee’s monthly meeting. The First Methodist church finance and stewardship commission hosted leaders from North Bend Coos Bay and Coquille last Monday as part of the Every Member Canvass prep in May.
The Christian Church opens its Annual Spring Meetings on Sunday March 17 with William Hayes, NCC senior, as guest speaker. Hayes recently preached at Pine Street Christian church Tacoma Wash. Bill Blankenship leads as soloist and NCC male quartet member. Barbara Beeman is organist and accompanist. Theme centers on Christian Family Life with nightly sessions through March 17 to March.
Golfers have three weeks to submit scores for handicap calculations for the Annual Spring Handicap at Coquille Valles Golf & Country Club. Committee members Al Hall Russ Holiman and Bob Hewlett urge participation to ensure accurate handicaps and a record spring event starting the week after April 7.
The Pioneer theatre in Powers suffered a Thursday evening blaze that damaged the building and left the town without a daily venue. Cause under investigation, no insurance coverage, losses around $20,000. Powers Volunteer Fire Department led by Chief Lou Reed confined the fire, saving Gumwell's Variety Store and George Pratt's Barber Shop.
Emily Deborah Miller 89 longtime Myrtle Point resident and millinery shop operator died Friday March 8 at Myrtle Rest Home after a several week illness. Born March 21 1868 in Davis County Missouri she was widow of Albert A Miller who died 1934. Survivors include three daughters two sons a Portland man four grandchildren and four great grandchildren among others Funeral services were held Monday at Schroeder Bros Chapel at 2 PM with Rev Bruce Spencer officiating and burial at Norway Cemetery.
The Norway Cemetery Association will hold its annual meeting at the city hall in Myrtle Point on Tuesday March 19 at 730 PM. All interested persons are urged to be present.
Bolivar Copper Co President Ralph Carr spoke to the Powers Chamber of Commerce on March 6 1957 about building a copper smelter nearby. He referenced historical prospecting in 1897 1898 by J M Thompson and Carl Oman and showed pictures he claimed were authentic. Continued on page three.
The Powers Boy Scouts under Scoutmaster Sandy Anderson, sponsored by a leading Lions Club, launch a two week subscription drive for the Myrtle Point Herald. The campaign involves the Powers Chamber of Commerce led by Verlin Hermann, Ed Witoski, and Ray Shaffer with support from organized labor groups. Scouts earn 1.00 per new one year subscription and 100.00 per multi year, with 50 cents per year on renewals. Prizes total 10, 5, and 2.50 for top sellers. a Herald photographer will cover the event in Powers.
Walter Barklow local real estate man was elected president of the Myrtle Point Rotary Club at a board meeting held at the Barklow home. He will succeed Mitch Miners as president. Earl Roush is vice president and Bob Parsons secretary. New board members are Harold Rushing and Hubert Armstrong. Carry-overs Wm Tankersley and Mr Myers join the board for the coming year.
The Republican Women of Coos county host a dinner at the Coquille hotel Monday at 6 30 p m. Deskin Bergey of Pacific Power and Light Co. speaks on Whats Good for Coos County. Reservations: Myrtle Point 1933 or 1544 CO q 3863 Coos Bay. Bergey is a leading booster and will share news in the address.
Four Myrtle Point High School musicians join a 150 member Oregon All State Band at the OEA convention in Portland. Performers include Mapril Easton French horn Joanne Davenport baritone Jean Powerile bass clarinet and Dorothy Nelson clarinet under Leo W Moody Gonzaga University Spokane. Less Simons Myrtle Point band director serves as section leader.
Hiland PTA hosts benefit shows on March 19 and 20 at Hiland Theatre featuring Vagabondi ng in Vista Vision with color and star appearances. Kathryn Grayson Rita Marone Sir Cedric H Walter Hampton Leslie Nielsen headline a program praised nationwide.
