The object moved at high speed, appeared luminous, and could be followed for about a quarter hour before vanishing, convincing the witness that flying saucers exist. Funeral services for Marlin D. Evans drew a large Masonic delegation of 44 and a substantial Eastern Star attendance. Full military honors were given at the graveside by Myrtle Point American Legion Post 38 with a firing squad, color guard, and bugler. Evans, a longtime resident since 1923, served as city councilman and fire chief, supported rural fire district efforts, and belonged to the Methodist church, Masonic lodge, Eastern Star, and American Legion. He was born September 13, 1908, in Oskaloosa Kansas, and is survived by his wife Gladys, a daughter, two sons, and four grandchildren.
Mrs Watzling appointed temporary chairman and introduced Bertha Parker from the Oregon State Board of Health who outlined a 100 percent chest X ray program for all state residents to combat tuberculosis. Kay Peterson was elected Myrtle Point general chairman as the mobile unit arrives April 15 to 18 with four days in town and subsequent dates in Bridge and other locations.
Sitkum author E Easton receives a White House letter from President Eisenhower thanking him for Sunshine Shadows. The note, signed by Ann Ottman, expresses warm thanks and mentions favorite verses Kitchen Police and My New Mexico Lane.
This Is National 4H Club Week in America and Coos County ranks high in state. Walter Schroeder notes the history from Industrial Club Work to 4-H and the Smith Lever Act of 1914 enabling Extension service. Coos County 4-H leaders meet Thursday March 19 in Myrtle Point to rededicate the 4-H pledge and goals.
4 H youngsters with leaders decorated windows in the Myrtle Point business district to mark 4 H club week. One Sempert Drug store window honors four 4 H clubs including Grave Ford cooking and sewing groups. The Herald office window features Myrtle Point Rocketeers 4 H club.
In National 4-H Week letters, Governor Patterson of Oregon and President Eisenhower commend 4-H clubs. The Oregon note thanks 4-H youth for aiding state welfare through agriculture and civic responsibility, while Eisenhower urges continued rural leadership and citizenship, citing future benefits.
Lions entertained ladies at their annual banquet on Saturday. The program featured two acc cord ion solos by Miss Eben Strode and piano selections by Dr. Robert Ley of Co quille. Neugart sang with accompaniment by Mrs. Bill Downing and Mrs. Austin Dodge. Community singing led by Ed Semp rt and Arnold a. A dance followed as committee members Clinard Maat and Herman Tedsen were praised. Mrs. Jack Dunn thanked the Lions for a wonderful evening.
District Governor Elton Schroeder praised Mr. Wohgen for detailing Lions Club growth across 43 countries with over 50 000 members and about 10 000 clubs. Wohgen cited Lions as fostering fellowship worldwide and outlining ongoing global activities.
The Myrtle Point High School band and chorus performed a varied program on March 6 at the high school auditorium under director Lester V. Simons. Soloists Ilene Thompson and Gari Fleckenstein highlighted the concert with classical and musical selections.
Public Utilities warns Mountain States Power Co. president A Trimble that an 8 percent March rate increase must be absorbed by the utility. The commission states the extra charge will be carried in a backlog for future adjustments and not billed to customers now.
Paul Franzen elementary school superintendent hosted a Roo tary club luncheon to view 1952 World Series footage of the Yankees and Dodgers, with Bill Downing operating the movie projector. The same pictures were shown at Franzen’s luncheon.
In incomplete notes from Local Trap Grounds, officials hint Easter Ham shoot details to be announced later. Club members compete weekly in Oregon graphic shoots with seven remaining events in the tournament. Results show Joe Sayre and Margaret Alborn posting strong scores, while several shooters keep aiming for better times.
