The Twelfth District reports improved business in late 1940 with expansion in defense and durable goods. Aircraft and shipbuilding activity increased, as did steel, mining, and non ferrous metals demand though some sectors cooled. Department store sales rose notably in San Diego and Tacoma, while overall year to year lending to business grew about 11 percent.
Aaron Day an 18 year old from Jack Alabama died Saturday at McKinney CCC camp from pneumonia. His body was shipped to Schroeder undertaking parlors. Day was popular with camp mates and his death marked the fourth in two weeks at the camp. He was the only child of a widowed mother. Camp reports say other boys are progressing satisfactorily and no further deaths are expected from the current sickness epidemic.
Mrs Dorothy Bishop spoke to the Junior Womans club at Mrs A L Powries home on The American Home The talk drew from the Oregon State College conference theme Adequate Nutrition and linked home life to national strength through nutrition She urged parental responsibility in child development and noted rising divorce rates on the Pacific coast Rural areas show lower divorce rates but older couples often stick it out The gathering featured refreshments hosted by Mrs Karl Dement Mrs Lawrence Hawker and Mrs Lyle Know The next meeting will elect officers with Mrs Waldemar Gurney presiding and noms including Mrs M HThemes Mrs Ralph Whitaker and Mrs Karl Dement.
A community program led by Mrs Dorothy Bubop and Myrtle Point leader Mrs N G W Perkins plans to train families in mattress making at a center. Eligibility covers farm, part farm, and non farm families by income rules, with construction time about 14 1 2 days per mattress and 75 cents cost each. Cascade College 95-voice A Capella choir from Portland will perform Thursday evening at the Methodist church in Coquille at 8:00 p m. The event is a music lovers highlight in the Coquille Valley with proceeds or details listed in local notices.
A Cham ber of Commerce meeting at Myrtle Cafe will receive a plaque from a Secretary of State representative honoring Myrtle Point for second place in division four of the 1940 Oregon Cities Traffic Safety contest. Austin Dodge, chairman, says the plaque and other business matters will be discussed to promote safety first in traffic.
The HL. S. honor roll lists fifteen freshmen with top marks for the last six weeks. Sophomores are second with fourteen, seniors third with thirteen, and seniors total seven. Surplus foods available to families in Coos county from March 1 to March 21 under the Food Stamp Plan. M. Louis Belaggio announced eligible items for blue stamps in local stores. The March list mirrors February, covering grapefruit, oranges, apples, pears, onions, Irish potatoes, butter, raisins, rice, pork lard, all pork, corn meal, shell eggs, dried prunes, hominy, grits, dry beans, wheat flour, and whole wheat.

Miss Cale Baker home economist nationally known for cooking schools broadcasts and demonstrations will show modern electric cookery at Schroeder's furniture store Friday afternoon. She trained at Kansas State college and joined a Chicago manufacturer’s Home Economics staff before conducting cooking schools across the United States for utility companies and colleges.
Mrs Dal King Heir was elected president of the Coos County Health Association to succeed Mrs C J O Neill of Marshfield. The vote occurred at the annual Marshfield meeting with representatives from nearly a dozen clubs. New officers include Mrs Clare Lehmanowsky executive secretary Myrtle Point. Mrs Paul McElwain vice president. Miss Catherine Going corresponding secretary. Mrs Tom Stevens treasurer. Ned Kelley financial secretary.
Six of fourteen Coquille valley men drafted for Portland quota returned March 1 after failing medical exams in Portland. Recalls list Raymond Ward Myrtle Point Dean Potter Lester Broadbent Walter Hemenyk John Masters Henry Peterson. Sumner replacements will join March quota, boosting Coquille to 14 for March period. Five of six men sent to induction Wednesday by Curry county board were rejected for physical defects.
Myrtle Grange welcomed visitors at a meeting led by Mr and Mrs Rochek who received third and fourth degree. Four guests attended including Mrs Cora Axe from Catching Inlet and Joe Fosse from West Moat Grange. Also present were Mr and Mrs Tom Luttrell of Broadbent, with Coos County Grange council in attendance. A invite to meet next Monday was extended.
Myrtle Point earned second prize in the fourth division for safety the accolade to be presented by a Secretary of State representative at the Chamber of Commerce meeting at Myrtle Cafe Tonight a council meeting in City Hall Monday night reported the secretary. The council also voted to oppose House bill 108 proposing an electrical energy tax instead of a property tax on electric companies.
A transient set a flaming mattress in a city jail on Saturday night. J Moore and City Marshal Bert Pearson rushed to the scene and freed the inmate. The fire was quickly extinguished with no serious injuries reported beyond shock.
Co. F. Wooldridge, a local plumber, bought the stock and shop fixtures of deceased W. R. Wrennie of Grants Pass and moved them to Myrtle Point on Monday. He opened a shop near City Grocery at Tth and Spruce and plans regular hours, yielding sheet metal tools to expand his trade.
Receives Cuts' Gus Dietz slipped while carrying a crosscut saw at Mike Morrison's Lagging camp near River ton. He fell on the saw and cut his back in several places. Teammate Tom Whittington drove him to Myrtle Point for medical care and he remained in hospital until Saturday.
A club gathering featured a wedding cake presented to Truman Martley of Broadbent, newly married, who served it to attendees. A report noted 34 members attended a meeting last Friday night in Reedaport as part of the event amid minor scuffles and lost neckties.
William J. Moore of Smith Wood Products in Coquille suffered a skull injury and shock in a single vehicle accident around 11 a m Tuesday while entering Myrtle Point after crossing a bridge. Ralph Gilkison found the injured man and helped him to safety as witnesses described the car flipping several times and ending wrecked on the pavement.

City recorder E C Roberts notes multiple residence changes in Myrtle Point. Mr and Mrs James McCulloch and family with three followers recently vacated Bec Bowers house and moved into Davia Street Maple area. Axe family moved into former McCulloch residence.
Local Feed plans to relocate just east of its current Spruce street site. The Greer Swap room will be absorbed as remodeling widens space for the feed business. Bowling alleys were removed weeks ago and a new floor is being laid. The Swap Shop pile will be moved by March 15 for remodeling under E A Dodge and Austin Dodge.
