Council Orders Action On Dilapidated Downtown Buildings

City council will summon owners of several dilapidated downtown structures to appear or submit plans. The building committee reported ongoing hazards at the Kenneth Lair, Hamilton Thrift, Myrtle Hotel, Roland Bowers, Myrtlewood Bakery, Mrs Watzling, and Flentje Perkins sites. A two hour parking study and an audit of city finances were also discussed.

Fleming Conditions Improve After Feb 20 Car Crash

A McAuley hospital spokesman said Kent Liday is responding to treatment for injuries from the February 20 head on collision. Kent underwent leg fracture repair and later had a cast change, both legs in casts. Father Michael Fleming, injured in the same crash, remained in good condition with limited visitors allowed.

Stream Clearance Project Begins on Coos Bay Route

The Coquille River Port announces a clearance project for the Si rum area on the Coos Bay Wagon Road. BP&S Logging of Myrtle Point will remove jams and debris from Camas Creek to Six Mile Bridge over about two and a half months, funded at 61920 under the Federal Disaster Act via the Army Engineers.

School District Extends Spring Vacation For All Students

The school board cancels the week of March 22 through March 28 for Spring Vacation due to the high school state basketball tournament. The calendar originally planned three days, March 24 25 26, but now entire week is off to meet state requirements of 175 school days, reducing from 181 to 179 days for District 4.

Myrtle Point Students Attend International Relations Conference

Ten Myrtle Point high school students will attend the International Relations League conference in Eugene on March 5 and 6. The topic is the Sino Soviet Rift. Delegates from about 90 Oregon high schools will participate. Participants include Debby Troxell, Lynda Gilkison, Marcia Knight, Evelyn Belanger, Bonnie Roth, Phyllis Pillette, Peggy Larson, Joan Dement and Dan Ellis. Accompanying the group are IRC advisor Art Motz and Mrs. Philip Belanger.

At the Myrtle Grange meeting on February 20 Dianne Davis displayed colored slides from her European tour with stops in Scotland England Germany Switzerland Italy Spain France and homeward via Scotland. Stanton Stevens and Ellis Southmayde briefed on legislative bills while Opal Davis reported on the school budget committee. Birthday wishes were sent to Stanton Stevens Elast Southmayde Einer Neilsen and Mrs John Caudle. Refreshments were served by the Master and several members after the program.

Bobcat Basketball Team Wins Sunset League Championship Title In Two Thrilling Games

Myrtle Point clinched the Sunset League title by beating Gold Beach 68 53 in a key weekend pair. Reed Gurney led with 19 points, Bill Neal added 17 and 13 rebounds, while Terry Pullen and Don Mast scored in double figures as Myrtle Point raced to an 18 16 first quarter edge and 35 32 halftime advantage. The following night the Bobcats routed Pacific 63 28 as Gurney scored 19 and Neal 13, boosting their season mark to 18 1.

Myrtle Point Spring Opening Promotion Draw Planned

The Myrtle Point chamber of commerce retail trades committee voted to hold a drawing for four prizes of two reserve tickets to the upcoming basketball tournament. The drawing occurs in front of the Hiland Theatre at 3 pm on March 20, with tickets available from merchants starting March 15.

Club Appoints Ed Pillette To Two Year Post

Myrtle Point Sportsmen's club names Ed Pillette as new director for a two year term, filling the vacancy left by Bill Stone who moved to Medford. At a club meeting State Game commission chairman Tallent Greenough discussed pending legislation and consolidation of game and fish commissions. The club won the inter club shoot with Gold Beach and keeps the trophy. In the PITA shoot Feb 28 Roger Todd won class B, Dick Larson won close class C, Marvin Helvey won class D, George Veytilla won overall, Ken Wise doubles winner, Scott Wise junior winner, Velma Andersen high in overall.

Highway bids to be called for four lane project

George Burr of Coquille met with housewives early this week and a state highway letter to Sen. George Chapman announced bids will be sought for the Rink Creek to Glen Aiken creek four lane highway section in May. The project cost is stated as 41345 million dollars and Chapman urged solid support for the hr 42 project to prevent further limbo.
