The Powers Independent basketball team won its third straight victory in the state championship tournament at Oregon City Tuesday evening, defeating Weyerhaeuser 68 to 60. A win over a Portland team on Wednesday would make Powers state champions and earn a trip to the national championship in Omaha, Nebraska, followed by a Madison Square Garden tournament in New York City.
Schroeder's Funeral Home reports the body of Private Virgil R Billings killed at Okinawa is en route for burial. Details remain pending but interment is planned at Powers. Mr H Dayton left last week to return to Maxwell California after a weeklong visit with relatives.
Portland architect C N Freeman told the Junior High PTA meeting that building size depends on enrollment and finances. He noted new ideas reflect expanded curriculum with visual education driving plans for a multi purpose room and a flexible physical education space.

Myrtle Point residents will attend an open house for Dayton Bros sundry on 6th street near Spruce Road. John and Bill Dayton, local young entrepreneurs, have opened a new laundry plant in a modern building with delivery service. The Herald will publish a full announcement next week detailing the plant operations. The business is open now and a laundry pickup can be arranged via the new delivery truck.
After severe weather, Catching Creek Road reopened with about 50 men at work five days straight. Workers cleared slides and debris, re rock added along 10 miles. County court supplied crushed rock. William Dunn donated seven trucks. multiple mills and lumber firms contributed funds and materials.
Mrs. Jess Clinton of Myrtle Point, born October 13 1878 in Norway, died February 27 after weeks of illness. Funeral held Wednesday at the Methodist church with Rev. Wilmer A Briggs. interment in Kerway cemetery. Survived by husband Jesse Clinton, three children Lawrence Clinton Mrs A M Christensen and Mrs H C Wasner, brother Ralph Myers, three grandchildren. Pallbearers named. business houses closed in her honor.
The North Bend team again fell to the Myrtle Point Bobcats in a four quarter contest. Youthful yells from the crowd and bands added to the scene as spectators cheered for their favorites and the opening period ended tied 38 all.
