Blue and Gold Banquet Highlights Myrtle Point Cub Scouts

The Blue and Gold Banquet at Myrtle Crest school attracted many cub scouts and parents as the 57th year of Scouting was observed. Awards were presented, den mothers honored, and proceeds from the chili dinner fundraised for the 6th grade band.

Pvt Robert E Ralph Joins 43rd Engineer Battalion at Fort Benning

Private Robert E Ralph has joined the 43rd Engineer Battalion at Fort Benning Georgia. He is assigned to C Company and works as a construction machine operator in the battalion which builds and maintains roads airstrips bridges and ranges. He attended Myrtle Point High School before entering the Army.

Budget Committee Begins Study for School District 41

Budget officer Joe Stewart presented 1967 1906 preliminary receipts and expenditures. The committee elected Bob Detlefsen as chairman and Bob Hagen as secretary. The proposed budget shows a 48673.04 increase over last year raising the budget about 48 mills. Next meetings set March 6 at 8 PM and March 8 at 830 PM in the high school library due to a school board meeting. The panel aims to have the budget ready for public vote by mid April.

School Board Extends Spring Vacation to March 20

Wil lam Richardson and a delegation asked the board on Feb 22 to lengthen spring break from March 13 15 to March 20 to allow MPHS participation in the State A-2 Basketball Tournament at Coos Bay. The board approved the extension reducing school days to 178 from 180, above the 175 required.

City Lighting Upgrade Plans Pushed After Commission Review

The City Planning Commission met Monday night to study Myrtle Point street lighting. Pacific Power reports supported extending and modernizing the system and assessing park access and right of way issues for a potential further step at the March 14 meeting.

Nelson to Represent Myrtle Point High in UN Speech Tourney

John Nelson, junior, will represent Myrtle Point High School at the United Nations speaking contest in Coquille at 8 p.m. on Saturday March 4. Finalists include Sharon Cole Joan Babb Beck Mast Faye Wells Joy Backlund and Nelson. The winner earns a trip to Gettysburg Washington D C and a loop through Canada and U S sites.
