George Hall was named Elk of the Year at the Coquille Valley Elks Lodge meeting on Feb 28. He received a framed plaque signed by Grand Exalted Ruler Raymond Dobson and Grand Secretary James J. Fitzpatrick as Past Exalted Ruler Bob Haug presented it. Hall, 76, has long served as lodge publicity man, photographer, bulletin editor, and flower gardener at his own expense.

Army Private Richard E. Down 23 completed a smmdio operator course Feb 27 at Ft Ord California after 10 weeks of basic radio and electrical theory and Morse code training. He returns home on 14 day leave with wife Brenda and his parents all of Myrtle Point before leaving March 15 for Vietnam. He was a senior at Southern Oregon College before enlisting in September 1966.

Bridge Plans For Coquille River Span Near Powers
A pre work meeting at Powers Ranger Station brought together Forest Service officials and Laskey Clifton Construction of Reedsport to discuss plans for the South Fork Coquille River Bridge replacement 16.3 miles south of Powers. They outlined construction start dates and bridge closure timing with traffic detours in place. the bridge will remain open until about two weeks after construction begins on March 6.
