Local ranchers report repeated coyote predation on sheep flocks. Keith Bushnell of Myrtle Point and J. J. Geaney of Coquille describe severe losses, noting 500 ewes and lambs killed in 1971. Geaney operates a large flock with his son R. C. Geaney amid ongoing battles with predators.
Geaney notes the county trapper caught 26 coyotes on his ranch in 1972 but sees no effect on sheep. 1971 statistics show 2,890 sheep killed mainly by coyotes, with 77 calves affected. Coos County raises about 12 000 head of beef and 20 000 ewes as flocks dwindle amid the predator issue. value of sheep sales in 1972 is incomplete.
